Hamilton Gardens: Gardens from Around the World
Hamilton Gardens features 18 enclosed gardens inspired by gardens from around the world. Rather than a single garden, it offers a collection of different design ideas. For your visit, you can choose a highlights tour or an audio guide; both are suitable for the whole family. The enclosed gardens open daily from 10 a.m., except on Christmas Day. Opening hours may change, so check them again before your visit.
Waitomo: Three Caves, Different Experiences
The Waitomo cave network comprises three caves: Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave. At Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a short boat ride takes you through the glowworm grotto. Ruakuri Cave offers a different focus: it is wheelchair accessible and contains extensive limestone formations and crystal structures. The cave network therefore offers something for different interests, from a short boat ride to geological formations and the accessible facilities at Ruakuri Cave.
Maungatautari: Rich Biodiversity and a Guided Cultural Experience
The ancient forest at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is home to more than 730 native species, including kiwi and kākāpō. The site also offers the Moa Hunter experience, an immersive cultural journey led by a mana whenua guide. Nature and culture are two distinct reasons to explore the sanctuary: the species count reflects the richness of its wildlife, while the guided experience focuses on culture.
On Foot or on Mountain Bike Trails
The Over the Mountain Track follows a historic route to Pukeatua Peak, including Te Raki Track and Te Tonga Track. The hike runs from Hicks Road in the north to Pukeatua in the south and takes around 5 to 6 hours. From the southern peaks, you can enjoy views of the forest and Waikato’s lush landscape. The approximate duration gives you a practical guide when planning a multi-hour hike into your trip.
For mountain biking, Te Miro Mountain Bike Park offers varied terrain and trails for active families as well as particularly experienced mountain bikers. The trails are surrounded by native and planted forest. Unlike the hike, which has a defined duration, the park’s focus is on its variety of terrain and the different types of riders it caters to.
Hobbiton Movie Set: A Guided Walk
The Hobbiton Movie Set offers a guided walk through the 12-acre film set. The Signature Tour includes a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn. This makes the walk part of a tour with a specific inclusion.
