Zonnemaire offers several distinct starting points for a trip: the grain mill De Korenbloem, the small Dorpsstrand on the Grevelingen, the Naterkreek as a place for observation, and local cuisine that is largely plant-based. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether cultural history, time by the water, nature observation or food should shape your stay. This gives your search a personal focus without turning the individual themes into a fixed itinerary.

Church Architecture and Pieter Zeeman

The Hervormde Kerk is a hall church built in the eclectic style. Its west tower is partly integrated into the main body of the building: it is therefore not entirely separate from the rest of the church. The church has a two-manual organ with an attached pedal, made by P. Flaes of Amsterdam in 1871. The building’s form, the integration of the tower and the organ offer different ways to look at the structure: the exterior form of the hall church, alongside a specific dated feature with a named maker and place of origin.

Pieter Zeeman was born in Zonnemaire on 25 May 1865. A bust of him stands beside his birthplace. The exact date of birth and the memorial provide a biographical connection to the town’s history. Those wishing to compare cultural traces will find a different perspective here than at the church and mill: the focus is on a person and their birthplace, not the architectural history of a building.

The Korenbloem and Its History

The Korenbloem is a grain mill in Zonnemaire. It was built in 1872 to replace an older mill that had burned down, and was restored in 1990. The dates mark two different stages: the construction of a new mill after the loss of its predecessor, and a later restoration. Visits are generally available on Saturdays between 11:00 and 17:00 while the mill is operating, as well as by arrangement; please confirm your visit in advance. This makes it possible to understand the mill not only by its year of construction, but also through its eventful building history.

Beach and Naterkreek

Dorpsstrand Zonnemaire is a small, quiet beach on the Grevelingen, with shallow, clear water. Local water and beach conditions may vary. The Naterkreek offers a different view of the landscape: it cannot be crossed, but is easy to view from the Grevelingendijk or the Binnendijk, which cuts through the area. The two nature-related attractions therefore also differ in how they are experienced: at the beach, the focus is on time by the water; at the Naterkreek, on viewing it from the dikes.

Local Cuisine and Trip Planning

Proeflokaal d’Ouwe Smisse is located in a former blacksmith’s forge. At d’Ouwe Smisse in Zonnemaire, you’ll find local cuisine that is largely plant-based, with several vegetarian dishes. This approach is a useful point of reference when choosing where to eat; the menu may change. The building’s former use as a forge and its cuisine offer two different sides of the place: its history as a building and its food selection.
