Ring Village and Landscape History

Noordgouwe is a ring village: the church stands at its center, surrounded by a moat and old houses. The village is also a protected village conservation area. Its history is therefore reflected both in the layout of the village and in individual historic buildings. The Gouwe once ran through the site of today’s village; near Zierikzee, this waterway connected with the open sea. This former water connection belongs to a different aspect of the village’s history than the visible layout of its center.

Weeltje van Arjaon de Kuper is a remnant of a dike breach. Alongside the former Gouwe, it points to another aspect of the landscape’s history: the dike breach. A historic waterway and a landscape relic thus stand side by side as distinct features.

Church, Farms and Historic Uses

The Driekoningenkerk is a single-nave cross-shaped church with a choir closed off on three sides and an integral three-storey tower. These terms help describe the building’s form: “single-nave” describes the church interior, while “cross-shaped church” refers to its floor plan; the choir’s ending and the tower identify other defining elements. The church houses a probably 500-year-old octagonal baptismal font made of hardstone, which has been returned to its original use. The building’s form and a furnishing that has been put back into use thus stand side by side.

The historic buildings also differ in form and purpose. Oude Molenwerf is a long-gabled farmstead with a bakehouse dating from 1700. The houses of Huisje de Pottere were built by Maria de Pottere in 1651 to support the widows of fallen officers. Buitenplaats Weelzicht was extended in 1785 as a country estate for the mayor of Zierikzee. Meestoof Willem III was founded in 1863 and used to process madder roots. These details about their purposes offer another perspective on this building history: Huisje de Pottere focused on supporting widows, Weelzicht served as a country estate, and the meestoof processed madder roots.

Explore on Foot or by Bike

In the rural surroundings of Noordgouwe and Schuddebeurs, walking routes pass through agricultural landscapes, along dikes and waterways, through woodland, and through village centers and past monuments. Depending on the route, different landscapes may take center stage: farmland and water, woodland, or village centers with monuments. Trail conditions and facilities can change; check both before setting out.

The “Monumentale dorpen en gehuchten” cycling route passes through Noordgouwe. This gives you a clear distinction when planning: on foot, you can choose among the different landscapes and village features of the rural surroundings; by bike, you can follow the named route through Noordgouwe. Which option better suits your stay depends on whether you would rather explore different landscapes on foot or include a bike ride through the village.
