Brouwershaven combines its history as a port town with its location right on the Grevelingenmeer. De Nicolaas, the Brouws Museum and the Jacob Cats town walk explore different aspects of its cultural heritage, while water sports and recreational boating take centre stage at the marina. If you are planning a stay, you can weigh up cultural and historical discoveries against activities on the water—or take both into account when choosing your destination.

From port town to historic Brouwershaven

Brouwershaven was founded around 1285 as a new port for Brijdorpe, after its harbour had silted up. The town’s maritime history includes fishing and trade in wine, beer, timber and flax. This history therefore encompasses different aspects of life in the harbour: fishing as well as the exchange of goods. Brouwershaven is also the birthplace of Jacob Cats. The Jacob Cats town walk offers a distinct cultural perspective on the town.

Brouwershaven has 59 entries in the Dutch Rijksmonumenten register. This number may change when the register is updated. De Nicolaas is a Rijksmonument more than 700 years old. Guided tours of the church are available for both individual visitors and groups.

Church, museum and Jacob Cats

You can book a guided tour at the Brouws Museum. Its collection includes various objects that illustrate life and work at sea and in the harbour during that period. These include instruments for determining location at sea or along the coast, models of ship’s weapons, and part of the gold trade coins found in Brouwershaven in 2000, which date from the 15th to the 17th century. The examples thus range from navigation and trade to the armament of ships.

The church, museum and town walk each focus on different aspects: as an old Rijksmonument, De Nicolaas represents the built heritage; the museum collection explores life and work at sea and in the harbour; and the walk takes Jacob Cats as its point of reference. If you choose Brouwershaven primarily for its history, you can see these attractions as different themes of the town rather than equating them with a single sight.

Water sports and recreational boating

Brouwershaven is a municipal port of call, established specifically to accommodate recreational boats. The Brouwershaven marina offers members and visiting guests opportunities for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and fishing. The activities mentioned range from sailing and surfing to paddling and fishing.

Another option is boat rental: At Sea Yachting offers sailboats and sloops for rent in Brouwershaven. While the activities at the marina include several water sports, the rental options listed are these two types of boat. If you plan your trip around activities on the water, you can distinguish between different ways of spending time on the Grevelingenmeer.

Town walk and cycling route

There are also two different ways to experience Brouwershaven on land. The Jacob Cats town walk is for anyone interested in exploring the poet’s birthplace. The “Monumentaal fietsen Midden-Schouwen” cycling route passes through Zonnemaire on its way to Brouwershaven. The town walk and the route differ both in theme and in how you get around; you can also understand the route by following its course, without assuming a particular duration.
