Ellemeet combines coastal experiences with village history and poetry. When choosing accommodation, it is worth distinguishing between the different aspects of the village: the beach is known for sports and surfing, Straô Rieën is an annual tradition, and the Sonnet Route takes you through the Zeeland landscape between the centre and the beach. This lets you tailor your stay to the beach, an event or culture.
Beach and water sports
Ellemeet beach is designated as a family and sports beach; surfing is permitted there. There is paid parking at the Strandtoegang Ellemeet car park, and the beach is a one-minute walk from there. If you specifically want to kitesurf or ride a kite buggy, plan to visit beaches further along the Brouwersdam; both activities are permitted there. Surfing is specifically mentioned for Ellemeet beach. Water sports options therefore vary depending on the beach in question.
Straô Rieën: horses and the beach
Straô Rieën is an annual event held in six villages on Schouwen, including Ellemeet. During the procession, decorated horses travel from the villages to the beach. The tradition includes a ride to the beach, where the horses’ legs are washed and wounds are treated with seawater. The journey to the water is part of the tradition. If you want to experience Straô Rieën, check the date for the year in question before travelling.
Travalje, cemetery and historic architecture
A Travalje stands in Ellemeet’s village square and is maintained by Stichting Monumenten Schouwen-Duiveland. The old cemetery in Ellemeet is also now a cultural monument. The farmstead “de Drie Wilgen” offers another architectural highlight: its house dates from the 18th century, is L-shaped and has a continuous hipped roof. The Travalje, cemetery and house represent different aspects of the village’s cultural heritage.
Sonnets between the centre and the beach
The Sonnet Route adds a literary touch: you can read the sonnets along the route through the Zeeland landscape between the centre of Ellemeet and the beach. If you would like to explore the texts in more depth, you can get in touch to arrange a sonnet reading, a guided walk along the sonnets or a workshop. Arrange your preferred date directly. The third sonnet sequence is located in Beweegpark De Wuisse; the park also has jeu-de-boules courts. This gives you two different points of interest there: a work from the sonnet series and an opportunity to play. The three formats offer different ways to engage: the reading focuses on the texts, the guided walk on the route along the sonnets, and the workshop on exploring sonnets yourself.
