Montfoort lies on the Hollandse IJssel. Its cultural character is shaped by its windmill and town history, galleries and a museum; Linschoten adds a protected village setting and Landgoed Linschoten to your travel plans. The differences below offer concrete points of reference.

Windmill history and culture in Montfoort

Molen De Valk has shaped Montfoort’s skyline for more than 250 years. The mill offers tours with experienced millers on Saturdays; check the date before your arrival. Flour is milled and sifted at the mill, and baking mixes are put together. This lets you combine your visit with a glimpse of a traditional craft, rather than seeing the mill only as a landmark.

Stadsmuseum De Knoperij presents Montfoort’s thousand-year history through themed exhibitions. Button-making was an important part of this history in the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum is also the starting point for historical town walks, offered on paper, digitally or with a guide. As exhibitions and booking options may change, ask in advance about the current offer and available walks.

The architecture also tells the story of different chapters in the town’s history. Kasteel Montfoort was originally built in the Middle Ages on the edge of the town centre. Het Oude Stadhuis is a medieval building and part of the former IJsselpoort; it houses a modern restaurant and a characterful town café. Galerie Montfoort is located in the basement of the former town hall, dating from 1375, and displays the gallery owners’ own works as well as works by other artists.

Linschoten, the estate and the polder landscape

Linschoten has a protected village setting. The present-day Grote of Sint-Janskerk on Kerkplein dates from the 13th century. It is thought to have been founded as a chapel beside nearby Linschoten Castle, which has been gone for centuries. The cautious interpretation of its origins and the church building’s long history offer a distinct way to explore the village’s past.

Landgoed Linschoten covers more than 500 hectares and is the largest continuous estate within the Randstad. It is also a protected nature area with many unusual plants. TOP Landgoed Linschoten is a starting point for exploring the surrounding polders on foot, by bike or by boat. Engherkade, a dike more than three kilometres long between Montfoort and Linschoten, passes through a landscape of pastures, meadow birds such as curlews and lapwings, cows and numerous ditches.

There are concrete options for different route plans: the Montfoort section of the QR-Fit and Experience Route is 3.1 kilometres long and runs through the town park and the Hofland neighbourhood. The Doortraproute Montfoort is a 31.3-kilometre cycling route through Linschoten, Montfoort and Oudewater. Along the way, it passes cheese farms, orchards and Molen De Valk. The distances refer to different routes: the Montfoort route section on the one hand and the cycling route on the other. Conditions on the latter may change; check them before setting off.

The QR-Fit and Experience Route offers free outdoor exercise in Montfoort and Linschoten. One part is the Waterflipper, an educational experience about animals in and around the water in Montfoort town park. This offers a contrast between a cycling tour through several places, a shorter route section described locally and a themed activity in the town park.

Regional cuisine and special activities

The food and excursions on offer also vary. The farm shop at Kaas- en Zorgboerderij Doruvael sells cheese made on the farm and other regional products. During the summer months, the farm serves freshly baked apple pie, herbal tea from its own garden and toast with homemade cheese on its terrace, with views across the pastures. As this offer is seasonal, it is best to confirm availability before your trip. Refined seasonal dishes made with local ingredients are served in the historic setting of Kasteel Montfoort.

Boer Hans has a completely renovated 18-hole mini-golf course. The farm games include tug-of-war, fetching water from the ditch, transporting cheese and wheelbarrow races; there is also clog foot golf in the middle of the expansive pastures of the Groene Hart. Het Beloken Land offers guided visits to a duck decoy, which must be booked in advance. If you plan your days around activities like these, check dates and booking options ahead of time. A booklet with the route and information about the monuments on the Monumentenroute Montfoort is available from the Toeristisch Informatiecentrum TIP De Knoperij; confirm that the booklet is available before your visit.
