In the Utrecht region, you can explore cultural heritage and nature in different ways: from UNESCO sites and castles to hiking and cycling routes. The region is centrally located in the Netherlands and is easy to reach. It is well suited to day trips, weekend breaks and longer holidays. Check individual connections before you travel.

Forests, heathland and routes on the Heuvelrug

Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug includes deciduous and coniferous forests, wind-blown sands and extensive heathland. While hiking, you may spot deer, badgers, sand lizards and black woodpeckers. The landscape therefore offers both a variety of natural habitats and the chance to look out for wildlife in the forests.

The national park has more than 95 kilometres of mountain biking trails, spread across nine routes. The Heuvelrughike is a different kind of challenge: this 92-kilometre hiking route runs from Huizen to the Grebbeberg and is divided into five stages. It is the only continuous hiking route across the entire Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The stages and the nine mountain biking routes offer two clearly different ways to explore the landscape.

The region’s natural landscapes also vary: forests and heathland lie on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, while lakes rich in water are also part of the scenery. Country estates and green city parks can be found in the province of Utrecht. The options therefore range from paths through forests and heathland to landscapes shaped by water and designed green spaces.

Water lines and cultural heritage

Since July 2021, the Hollandse Waterlinies have formed a single UNESCO World Heritage site. The open, strategic landscape stretches for over 200 kilometres, from Edam to the Biesbosch. Its history includes sophisticated waterworks and 96 forts. Along the Waterlinies, you can follow hiking and cycling routes with expansive views, winding dikes and striking forts. Here, the experience of the landscape and military heritage are closely intertwined.

At Fort bij Vechten, the Waterliniemuseum introduces visitors to both the Hollandse Waterlinies and the Roman Limes, the border of the Roman Empire. The museum brings nature and cultural heritage together. Fort bij Vechten also offers interactive exhibitions and activities that present its history to children in a playful, accessible way. It is also a starting point for cycling or hiking tours through the green landscape around Bunnik and Utrecht.

The Schatkamer of the Nationaal Militair Museum offers further insights into military history, displaying old paintings, classic weapons and other treasures of the nation’s military history. A visit here focuses on collection pieces and history, while the routes along the Waterlinies connect cultural heritage with scenic views and landscapes.

Castles, architecture and museums

Kasteel Amerongen preserves historic interiors and works of art that have been carefully maintained for 350 years. The grounds include a rose garden, an old berceau, a stately sweet chestnut tree and an animal cemetery. This makes the site interesting for travellers who want to take in the design of the grounds as well as the castle rooms.

Kasteel de Haar is the largest castle in the Netherlands. Architect Pierre Cuypers rebuilt it from a ruin between 1892 and 1912. Its history, richly decorated halls and Kasteeltuinen offer several ways to explore the site. The Rietveld Schröder House, in turn, is an outstanding example of the De Stijl movement and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. Reservations are required to visit; check the visitor arrangements before your trip.

You can also explore the region by water: between Wijk bij Duurstede and Utrecht, you can canoe through a river landscape, passing orchards, castles and small tea gardens. The journey offers a different perspective on the landscape from hiking and cycling routes. Which of these experiences you want to shape your stay can therefore be a useful starting point for planning your trip.
