Heathland and drifting sands have been preserved at Landgoed Heidestein. The estate lies in the forests near Zeist and offers a distinct natural highlight. The city also has a cultural focus, with parks, architecture and museums.

Forest, heathland and trails

A hiking route at Landgoed Heidestein is 4.5 kilometres long. The nature walk starts at the Schaapskooi Heidestein Visitor Centre, housed in a former potstal (a traditional livestock barn), built in 1884 in Zeist. The centre’s entrance is accessible via Kerckeboschlaan, at the junction with Hoog Kanje. Check the route information again before your trip. For the hike, bus route 58 serves the Hoog Kanje stop; you should also check the service in advance.

In the Heidestein and Bornia area, two marked trails can be combined into one route; there are also two children’s routes. The exceptionally old Het Zeisterbos offers a different perspective on nature. On a walk, you might spot a common redstart, tawny owl, goldcrest or marsh tit. Birdwatchers can keep an eye out for these four species, though sightings are not guaranteed.

De Boswerf has a nature play forest where children can play. It is also a good starting point for hikes, cycle rides, and adventure and scavenger hunts. Activities for all ages are organised there. The area offers a variety of nature experiences, from views of forests and heathland to trails and activities with different themes.

Parks and Slot Zeist

The historic, leafy Walkartpark is a Rijksmonument, a designated national heritage site, with significant cultural and historical value. It lies between Slot Zeist and the centre of Zeist and is used for walking, meeting up and relaxing. Since 2015, an art trail has linked Slot Zeist with the centre. The park’s location and the art trail offer two different points of reference for finding your way between these places.

Slot Zeist was designed by Roman in the Dutch Classicist style. The castle garden is open to the public between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm; check the opening hours again before your trip. Tours of Slot Zeist take visitors into rooms that are not normally accessible. Tour availability may change, so it is worth checking the programme in advance. Changing exhibitions are currently held there throughout the year; check the latest dates for these too.

A hiking route around Slot Zeist connects forests, country estates and paths through farmland. Cycle routes passing castles and country houses can also take you by Slot Zeist. For a break after hiking or cycling in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the Orangery at Slot Zeist serves coffee with homemade pastries, lunch, drinks and snacks.

Routes and cultural discoveries

The Culinaire Route Zeist is a 6.7-kilometre walk past restaurants, historic sites and nature in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It starts at TOP Slot Zeist. By comparison, the hiking route at Landgoed Heidestein is shorter, at 4.5 kilometres. The routes have different focuses: this one highlights restaurants, historic sites and nature along the walk, while the other centres on hiking at Heidestein.

The Het Hernhutter Huis Museum tells the story and explores the lives of the Moravians. Its permanent exhibition includes liturgical objects, hymnbooks, photographs, prints and posters. Guided tours also include a walk around squares, cemeteries and other points of interest. A museum visit thus complements the parks and architecture with exhibitions and guided discoveries.
