De Valk Mill stands on Montfoort’s old city wall and has been a landmark since 1753. Nearby, the castle grounds, city gate and former commandery of the Knights Hospitaller tell different chapters of the town’s history. The De Knoperij town museum, a gallery and the waterways along the Hollandsche IJssel also offer their own starting points for a visit. For your planning, there is both a guided tour of the historic town centre on request and a 2.5-kilometre walking route; the two options have different focuses.
Castle Grounds, City Gate and the Town’s Earlier History
Kasteel Montfoort was built between 1156 and 1178 to protect the Bishopric of Utrecht from the Count of Holland. The medieval complex was built on the edge of the town centre and includes an authentic gate and an old moat. Its history also includes a significant change: after it was destroyed by the French in 1672, Kasteel Montfoort was demolished apart from the forecourt. The castle’s construction, defensive role and later demolition are all part of its history.
The IJsselpoort is the only surviving city gate in Montfoort. It stands as a separate testament alongside the history of Kasteel Montfoort. Another historic complex is the former commandery of the Knights Hospitaller, which included a chapel with a cloister. These places tell different aspects of the town’s history: the castle of its former defensive role, the city gate of Montfoort’s fortifications, and the commandery of its former religious use.
De Knoperij and Guided Insights
The De Knoperij town museum presents Montfoort’s history through historical objects, artworks and documents. Admission to the museum is free. De Knoperij also serves as a tourist information centre. If you would like to explore the historic town centre with a guide, you can request a guided tour: volunteer guides offer tours on request. The museum and the tour provide two different ways to explore local history—one through the exhibits, the other on a walk through the town centre.
Mill, Millers and Gallery
De Valk Mill combines its position on the old city wall with a closer look inside the mill. Experienced millers are on site on Saturdays and are happy to show visitors around the building. The De Valk Mill shop sells flour as well as mixes for bread, cakes and biscuits. A visit therefore offers two distinct aspects: the historic mill and the baking ingredients sold there, without confusing them with a guided tour of the town centre.
Galerie Montfoort also adds to the cultural offering. It is located in the basement of the former town hall and displays works by its two gallery directors and other artists. The exhibitions may change. If you are interested in art, the gallery offers a different focus from the town museum, which presents Montfoort’s history through historical objects, artworks and documents.
Walking Route and Waterways
The Waterlinieommetje Montfoort is a 2.5-kilometre walking route. The Monumentenroute Montfoort is different in format: a brochure with information about the monuments is available from TIP De Knoperij. If you plan to take the walking route, check the latest route details before setting out.
Montfoort lies on the Hollandsche IJssel. The Oude Sluis provides access from the river to the Montfoortse Vaart. At the edge of Stadspark Montfoort, you can also enjoy a view of the historic city wall. In addition to the buildings, the waterways and a view of the wall offer further points of interest to help you find your way around the town.
