A distinctive church building dating from 1425, art and recurring cultural events give Den Hoorn a multifaceted character. The landscape is also part of its appeal: the village borders Duinen van Texel National Park, and several routes offer different themes and ways to explore the surroundings.
Church, Art and Changing Exhibitions
The Hervormde kerk in Den Hoorn is a distinctive building with a white tower. Ten bronze scallop shells set into the paving around the church mark the start of the Jacobsweg Amsterdam. These are two clear signs of the church building’s significance: it shapes the village’s appearance and also stands at the beginning of a named pilgrimage route.
Den Hoorn has several galleries featuring works by old Texel masters, including works by Ad Blok van der Velden, as well as modern art. De Hoeksteen, next to the Hoornder Kerkje, presents a new exhibition every month. Works by various artists are on display, often by artists from Texel. Different artistic perspectives are represented side by side: older artists from the island, modern art and regularly changing exhibitions.
Cultural Events and Theatre
The events also follow different schedules. Texel CultuurEiland, a cultural month, takes place every year around June. Broadway, a living-room theatre festival, is held every two years, with artists performing in residents’ living rooms. If one of these events matters to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.
Restaurant & Theatre De Toegift brings food and performances together in another way: a “theatre dinner” combines an evening meal with a theatre performance. There are also frequent performances featuring plays, cabaret-style entertainment, cabaret and music. The cultural offering thus ranges from recurring local events to an evening that combines a meal and a performance.
Landscape and Routes
The “Langs grote grazers” walking route starts in Den Hoorn and passes through beautiful natural scenery. Along the route, you can see mainly black Black Angus cattle. They eat a variety of plants and help prevent the dunes from becoming too overgrown. The animals grazing there may vary. The route therefore combines a walk with an insight into the role of grazing animals in the dune landscape.
Another route, “Den Hoorn Skéép en Lantskap,” runs east of Den Hoorn, passing old dikes and the Prins Hendrikpolder. The polder was drained in 1849. The “Den Hoorn, dorp van loodsen” route starts at the village church. For a seasonal cycling option, visitors can ride one of the bulb-field routes in the area around Den Hoorn in spring. There are several options to choose from: a walking route with views of the dune landscape, paths along dikes and a polder, and a spring cycling route.
The activities differ not only in theme but also in when they take place: Texel CultuurEiland is held every year around June, Broadway every two years, and the bulb-field routes are described as a spring activity. If you want to attend a particular event or enjoy a seasonal activity, you can take these timeframes into account when planning.
