Salt marshes, dune valleys and expansive beaches define Texel’s natural landscape. In Duinen van Texel National Park, heathland is part of the landscape, alongside wet and dry dune valleys and deciduous and coniferous forests. On the eastern side of the island lies De Schorren, an extensive salt marsh where spoonbills, eider ducks and oystercatchers find food and nest.

Explore varied landscapes on foot

Texel’s network of hiking trails spans almost 250 kilometres and forms an extensive web across the island. A description from 2025 presents it as having been renewed. A hiking route through the northern part of the national park leads from De Cocksdorp to Ecomare, with De Slufter as its highlight. No length is given for this route, but it connects two named starting and finishing points with a distinctive landscape feature.

The Het Alloo nature trail runs along the banks of a small dune lake and through flower-rich grassland where meadow birds nest. It is suitable for people using walking frames and wheelchairs, as well as for blind and visually impaired visitors. Check the conditions along the route before your visit, as temporary circumstances may affect it. In De Nederlanden, a long trail passes through different landscape types. Dunes, dune valleys and wet grasslands define this nature area; some of its trails are subject to seasonal restrictions.

Bertusnol also offers a distinctive landmark in the landscape: this high dune hill has a staircase leading to Texel’s highest viewpoint. The island’s hiking experiences therefore differ not only in length, but also in their surroundings and the features along the way.

Salt marshes, birds and the Wadden Sea

De Schorren is accessible only as part of an excursion. A mudflat walk across the salt marsh offers the chance to see birds, small animals and distinctive plants. Check the current excursion schedule in advance, as access may be subject to seasonal rules. The De Geul nature area is home to the largest spoonbill colony in the Netherlands; the size of the colony and the visibility of the birds vary seasonally. The two areas offer different wildlife-watching experiences: a salt marsh with several bird species in one, and a spoonbill colony in the other.

At Ecomare, you can see seals, seabirds and other marine animals, and learn more about the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, the North Sea and Texel’s nature. Seals receive ongoing care there. A presentation at the permanent seal group takes place daily at 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Ecomare is accessible by bus, bicycle and car, and is connected to Texel’s cycling network. Check the latest travel information before setting off.

Museum visits, traditions and insights into island life

The open-air museum at Museum Kaap Skil recreates a traditional fishing village, with authentically reconstructed fishermen’s houses, a bakery and a smithy. Craftspeople can often be seen at work there between May and October; check the seasonal schedule for specific demonstrations. The exhibits give an impression of the buildings and activities that made up a fishing village.

Texel has a centuries-old tradition called Meierblis, which is still celebrated today. On 30 April, bonfires are lit to welcome spring and mark the end of winter. Individual editions may be cancelled or changed. The Oudheidkamer Texel offers another glimpse into the past: its exhibition shows how people used to live, including sleeping in a box bed and cooking over coals.

Tastings and special experiences

At De Waddel on the Hoge Berg, you can take a walk with a tasting. Check the agenda to see when it is available, as this is a seasonal offering. At Schapenboerderij Texel, you can see young lambs up close in open pens; when the animals can be viewed there may vary by season.

The tidal flats are also part of Texel’s culinary experiences: visitors can collect fresh oysters themselves. If you plan to do so, check the tides, protected areas and current opportunities. A beer experience may conclude with a tasting of three beers in tasting glasses; these interactive activities depend on scheduled dates. Texel’s attractions range from landscapes and wildlife watching to regional traditions and tastings.
