De Koog is a seaside resort. Just one dune ridge separates the town from the beach and sea; the beach is directly accessible on foot from the centre. In addition to its coastal setting, nature watching and local history are other themes to explore during your stay. You can decide whether to focus on the beach, a particular walk or what is happening in town.
Church and Local History
The church in De Koog dates from 1719 and is designated a Rijksmonument, or Dutch national monument. For travellers who want to explore local history as well as the beach and nature, it is a specific point of interest.
Experience Nature: Ecomare and Trails
Ecomare is located in the heart of Duinen van Texel National Park. Visitors can see seals, birds, fish and other marine animals up close. The nature museum covers the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, the North Sea and Texel, bringing wildlife observation and natural history together. Ecomare is easy to reach by bus, bicycle and car. Take exit 13 on Pontweg; Ecomare is also connected to the cycle network. Before setting off, check the latest visitor information to plan your journey.
The Familiepad Alloo runs through dunes, forest and farmland. A birdwatching hide is part of the route, providing a dedicated spot for birdwatching. The different types of landscape and the hide offer contrasting highlights along the way.
De Nederlanden borders De Koog. Its dune meadows are rich in birdlife. A wide path from De Nederlanden leads to De Slufter; cycling is permitted on this path. This lets you choose between the birdlife of the dune meadows and a named route where cycling is expressly permitted.
Sommeltjespad and Village Walk
The Sommeltjespad is a 1.5-kilometre walking route for children through the forest near De Koog. Children can look for Sommeltjes along the way. The Sommeltjespad is in the national park on Pelikaanweg, 1796 NT De Koog. Unlike this forest trail, the approximately 2-kilometre Village Walk goes through and around De Koog and focuses on the history of the seaside resort. The comparison is straightforward: 1.5 kilometres through the forest with a search theme, or around 2 kilometres through and around the town with a focus on history.
Summer Market in De Koog
The Koger Dinsdagen is a summer market held every Tuesday in July and August from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you are planning your stay around the market, check the dates for the relevant year before travelling. This lets you include the seasonal market as a separate activity alongside the beach, nature trails and local history.
