De Cocksdorp can be explored through a variety of landscapes and excursions: in the Dorpzicht nature reserve, a route follows the Roggesloot; the northern dune area has many hiking trails; and from the Vuurtoren Texel, the view stretches across water and islands. There are also opportunities to observe the mudflats and take seasonal trips into the Wadden Sea area. For planning, it is useful to distinguish between a long-distance hiking route and an excursion with a set duration: the Noord-Hollandpad is 284 kilometres long, while the Wadexcursie De Cocksdorp takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
Dunes, mudflats and birdlife
The Dorpzicht route passes through a nature reserve along the Roggesloot, an old tidal creek, and through flower-rich, nutrient-poor grasslands. Many bird species, including rare ones, find a habitat in the northern dune area. These are two distinct landscapes: the old tidal creek and grasslands along the route, and the dune landscape with its trails and birdlife.
At the northern tip of Texel, the Wadden Sea and the North Sea meet. From the Vuurtoren Texel, visitors can look out over the North Sea, the Wadden Sea, the northern part of Texel and nearby Vlieland. There are dangerous currents in the waters off the northern tip of De Cocksdorp. Check the conditions before entering the water.
Hiking trails and the first stage
The Noord-Hollandpad begins in De Cocksdorp and is 284 kilometres long in total. This is on a different scale from the individual trails in the northern dune area. The first stage begins north of De Cocksdorp on Vuurtorenweg and is accessible by Texelhopper. On the Noord-Hollandpad, the Eijerlands Kanaal is crossed by a hand-pulled ferry. Check transport arrangements and ferry operating conditions before travelling.
If you include the route in your stay, you can distinguish the total length of the Noord-Hollandpad from its first stage. This puts the long-distance route and the specific stage on Vuurtorenweg side by side as different scales of hiking plans. The many trails in the northern dune area offer another way to explore the landscape on foot, while Dorpzicht focuses on the Roggesloot and the flower-rich grasslands.
Mudflat wildlife watching and trips by water
On the Wadexcursie De Cocksdorp, participants search for and observe animals that live on the mudflats. The excursion takes 1.5 to 2 hours and offers an immersive experience of the mudflats. Its fixed duration makes it a clearly defined activity alongside the hiking trails and longer routes.
De Vriendschap offers seasonal trips to observe seals in the Wadden Sea area, as well as day trips between Texel and Vlieland. After the crossing, you can rent bicycles on Vlieland and explore the island. Check the availability of seasonal trips before travelling. The options are quite distinct: the Wadexcursie focuses on animals on the mudflats, while the day trip combines a crossing with exploring the island afterward.
Local and landscape history
De Cocksdorp was named after N.J. de Cock, a shipowner from Antwerp. The reclamation of part of the Wadden Sea area is also part of the region’s history: an eleven-kilometre-long dike was built by 1,500 workers in twenty weeks. This enclosed part of the Wadden Sea area behind a dike; the area is now known as the Eierlandse polder.
The origin of the village’s name and the history of the land reclamation add a historical perspective to the nature experiences in De Cocksdorp. Together with the dune trails, the route along the Roggesloot, the view from the Vuurtoren Texel and the mudflat activities, they offer a range of different options for your stay.
