At the Westfriese Omringdijk, Winkel reveals two distinctive sides: the town’s cultural and architectural history, and a setting shaped by the dike landscape. For planning your trip, there are several specific highlights: the Lucaskerk, with its Knipscheer organ and cultural programme; the former town hall, with its historic details; and the Bloemencorso, held in September.
Culture and architectural history
Since 1987, the Culturele Stichting Niedorp has organised concerts and exhibitions at the Lucaskerk in Winkel. The church has a Knipscheer organ. The events and the instrument offer different points of interest: cultural programmes take centre stage, alongside the organ as a distinctive musical feature.
The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in Winkel is a hall church built in 1845 in the Waterstaatsstijl. “Hall church” describes its architectural form, while Waterstaatsstijl provides a further stylistic classification. The construction date, building type and style therefore offer three precise points of interest for architecture enthusiasts.
The former town hall of Winkel has been protected as a municipal monument since 2023. On the façade, an old sandstone inscription bears Winkel’s municipal coat of arms and the year 1599; the two oldest wooden beams date from 1615. The façade and the beams thus provide two different markers in time: one recorded in an inscription, the other evident in the age of the oldest beams.
Kunsttuin Winkel grew out of Ger’s great imagination and his craft and technical skills. It adds a creative dimension to the architectural history, shaped by personal vision and practical ability.
Museum Spaansen was established in February 1996 in the family’s former home to mark the 50th anniversary of the Spaansen family. It houses an extensive photo collection and various pieces of equipment used by the family business. The photographs and work tools bring together images and objects from the business, giving the museum a focus distinct from the architectural history of the town hall and churches.
Bloemencorso Winkel in September
Bloemencorso Winkel takes place every year on the fourth Sunday in September. The day begins at 11:00 a.m. with a fair, a market featuring local produce and handmade arts and crafts, and a food market. The parade starts at 2:00 p.m., led by the children’s procession with its creative constructions.
The schedule provides two clear times to plan your day around: the start of the morning market activities and the later parade. If you choose Bloemencorso as the highlight of your stay, check the annual programme for the exact date and visitor information.
Dike landscape and local connections
Winkel lies on the Westfriese Omringdijk, a 126-kilometre-long man-made dike that is itself a monument. It adds a landscape perspective to the town’s cultural and architectural history: instead of an individual building, the focus here is a large-scale man-made structure. For travellers interested both in historic details in the town and in cultural landscapes, this dike offers a distinctive point of interest.
