Landscape, architectural history and nature observation come together in Westerland as different travel interests; SUP adds an activity on the water. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first whether you want to focus on history, walks and birdwatching, or on water sports.

Landscape and routes

The highest point of the Stuwwal Wieringen, at 13 metres above sea level, lies just northwest of the Nicolaaskerk. This provides a specific reference point for the local landscape. The historic roads also offer clues to its form: they run from Den Oever via Hippolytushoef to Westerland and follow the higher-lying areas in their winding course. They were probably laid out in the early Middle Ages; this dating is an estimate and is not assigned to an exact year. The Rondwandeling Westerland van Wieringen is a walking route at the western tip of the former island of Wieringen. It adds a specific hiking option to the exploration of the historic roads.

Architectural history and water levels

The Nicolaaskerk presents architectural history in a clear chronological sequence. It is a hall church with a three-sided termination and was added in 1828 to the tower of a predecessor church dating from around 1500. The older tower and the 19th-century church building should therefore be distinguished; the church should not be understood as a single structure from just one period. The term “hall church” describes the church’s hall-like character, while “three-sided termination” refers to the shape of its end. The Peilschaalhuisje Westerland adds the history of water monitoring to this picture: Rijkswaterstaat had it built in 1919 to record water levels. It has cultural and architectural-historical value and is also a stop on the MUZ-Fietsroute – Wieringen & de Zuiderzeewerken. The route leads to buildings, landscape features and other monuments that tell the story of Wieringen’s ongoing transformation. Directly compared, the church combines the history of an older tower with the 1828 building; the measuring house represents the task of recording water levels. Check the current route before setting out.

Walking and birdwatching

Westerlander Koog is a natural area on Wieringen with marshes, reed beds and bodies of water. A walk there offers the opportunity to observe numerous bird species, including meadow birds, waterbirds and birds of prey. Its appeal lies in the combination of water, reeds and marshland, along with the chance to observe different groups of birds. A walk through the Koog therefore offers a different focus from exploring the buildings: the emphasis here is on the landscape and opportunities for nature observation.

SUP in Westerland

SUP School Westerland offers private lessons, group lessons, and a range of courses and training sessions. The site has ample parking, grassy areas for preparing equipment, and a sandy surface where you can stand for longer; there are several sheltered coves on the Amstelmeer. The different lesson formats help you decide in advance whether you would like to learn individually or in a group. Courses and site facilities may change; check the current formats and conditions before your visit.
