Barsingerhorn is a place whose character can be discovered through its village layout, architectural history and paths. The province of Noord-Holland has designated Barsingerhorn as a protected village landscape. Historic buildings and traces of earlier utilities and transport add to this picture. This gives a stay a cultural and historical focus that can be combined with time outdoors: the Tramabri is currently used as a starting point for walks.
Village Layout and Historic Routes
The village was first settled on small house mounds. Such house mounds can be found, among other places, along the Heerenweg and Koningsweg. This settlement pattern offers a glimpse into Barsingerhorn's early development, before individual buildings take centre stage. The Heerenweg also shapes the village and landscape: the built-up strip of Barsingerhorn along the Heerenweg, which runs from Barsingerhorn to Kolhorn, is a characteristic landscape backbone. The Heerenweg itself is a provincial monument.
Buildings and Traces of Technology
The former Mennonite church is located at Heerenweg 48. Pieter Brugman built it in 1862. It is culturally and historically significant as part of the history of Mennonite communities in Noord-Holland. Its specific architectural history and connection to the community's history give the site a cultural and historical focus.
At the eastern edge of the village, the remains of a windmill stand on the north side of the Vaart, in an open setting. They are of considerable significance to the landscape.
The former energy supply can also be traced at the Heerenweg. At the stolp farm at Heerenweg 10, pipes leading to the old biogas installation opposite can still be found. The black, round boiler was used to store biogas. The gas travelled through thin pipes to houses No. 3, 8 and 10, where it was used for lighting and cooking.
Walking and Transport History
The Tramabri on the Heerenweg in Barsingerhorn was built around 1910 and is currently used as a starting point for walks. Another trace of the village's history is the branch line of the N.V. Tramweg Wieringen-Schagen tramway. It ran from Barsingerhorn towards Wieringerwaard, ending at Van Ewijcksluis. The line opened on 1 March 1912 and closed in 1936.
Two different details are useful for walks: the 15-kilometre Westfriesedijkroute starts on the west side of Barsingerhorn at the Tramabri; Barsingerhorn is also the starting point for three waymarked circular walks. This lets you choose between a route with a specified distance and several circular walks. Route conditions and availability may change, so check the latest route information before setting out.
Barsingerhorn brings together a protected village landscape and architectural history with walking options today. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on the history of the buildings and routes, or set aside time for a walk. The historic dates and the different details about the walks help you distinguish between these interests.
