From the 13th-century Hippolytus Church to the Heidense Chapel, built in 2016, Hippolytushoef reveals different architectural layers from across the ages. There is also a war memorial, events, a marked route and swimming facilities. You can tailor your stay to architectural history, cultural events or active pursuits.
Architectural history in different styles
The Heidense Chapel was built in 2016 and features Romanesque design elements. The former post office, with its director’s residence, was built in 1919 to a design by architect Joseph Crouwel. Its understated Expressionist style also features elements of the Amsterdam School. The Hippolytus Church stands in the centre of Hippolytushoef and dates from the 13th century. These buildings illustrate different periods and design approaches, from the Romanesque-inspired chapel and Expressionist architecture to the medieval church.
Remembrance and events
A war memorial to resistance fighter Marten Snoodijk stands in Zandburen Cemetery. Made of natural stone, it is shaped like the bridge at Van Ewijcksluis on the Korte Afsluitdijk. Its design thus links a specific architectural reference with remembrance of Snoodijk.
The Hippolytus Church regularly hosts events such as classical concerts; individual dates vary. The fairs in Hippolytushoef also continue to take place, though their dates change from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around a concert or fair, check the relevant event dates in advance.
Route and swimming
The Wierdijk Route starts and ends in Hippolytushoef. Blue arrows mark the route in both directions. Check for current route information before setting out, so you can plan your walk using the signs.
Zwembad De Venne offers swimming lessons, special events and recreational swimming. Its facilities include a heated main pool and a separate heated toddlers’ pool. Which options suit your visit also depends on the current programme, so check the swimming pool’s schedule in advance.
Mudflat walks and museum
De Groot Recreatie organises various mudflat walks from Noord-Holland to the former island of Wieringen, in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The mudflat-walking experience includes a boat trip across the Wadden Sea. As the operator’s packages may vary, check current options and dates before planning your trip.
The Wieringer Eilandmuseum is located on the former Zuiderzee island of Wieringen, at the farmstead of its last resident and owner, Jan Lont. Packages for walks, cycling trips, boat trips or rides are offered in collaboration with other organisations. If you are planning a museum visit or one of these packages, check current opening and booking arrangements in advance.
Products and picnic area
At IJs- en zuivelboerderij De Wieringer, visitors can choose their own dairy products and use a picnic area. The range includes ice cream, yoghurt, fresh milk, quark, jam, fruit yoghurt and syrup, among other things. This farmstead offers a different focus from the architectural and memorial sites: here, the emphasis is on products and a place to picnic. Product availability may vary, so check the current arrangements before your visit.
