A residential tower as the origin of a castle, a former lace factory with working machinery and a church with an atrium: Horst offers different ways to explore history and culture. There are also trails in the Kasteelse Bossen, a museum of optical illusions and attractions with distinctive themes. During your stay, you can choose between culture, landscape and activities.
Kasteel Huys ter Horst and the Kasteelse Bossen
The history of Kasteel Huys ter Horst dates back to the 13th century. The castle began as a refuge with a donjon, or residential tower. Today, Kasteel Huys ter Horst rises above the Kasteelse Bossen; the ruins and their surroundings provide a habitat for special plants and animals. The Kasteelse Bossen are a former estate forest belonging to Huys, or Kasteel Ter Horst, and cover about 100 hectares. Here, the history of the castle meets a landscape with its own natural history.
The Ridders- en Roverspad is a 2.5-kilometre adventure trail in the Kasteelse Bossen that starts at Kasteel Huys ter Horst. A free-to-install app accompanies the trail with three themes; app details may change. Check the current signs before setting out. Another way to find your bearings is the approximately three-kilometre Erfgoed Route Limburg in Horst, which ends at Museum de Kantfabriek. The stated length and endpoint give you different points of reference when choosing trails for your stay.
Textile history and crafts
Museum de Kantfabriek is housed in the former Zuid-Nederlandse Kantfabriek. It presents the textile history of Noord-Limburg with working machinery and a unique collection of textile art. Both the building’s industrial past and textile art are at the heart of the museum. If you would like to explore textiles and crafts in more depth, the museum offers courses and workshops for beginners and advanced participants. As individual offerings may change, it is worth checking the current programme in advance.
The Limburgse Vlaaibakkerij Museum also focuses on a distinctive part of regional food culture: it tells the story behind Limburgse vlaai. It offers guided baking workshops for groups of ten or more. Participants can take home the products they bake themselves. This makes it a different kind of cultural experience from textile history or visiting a historic building.
Church art and unusual experiences
The Sint-Lambertuskerk is the work of Maastricht architect Alphons Boosten (1893–1951). In February 2016, it was officially designated a Rijksmonument. One distinctive architectural feature: it is the only church in the Netherlands with an atrium. The Schatkamer van Horst is located in the crypt. On guided tours of the church, you can see images of saints, other art treasures, the Schatkamer, the crypt and the exhibition in the atrium. Tours require reservations.
The Mind Mystery experience museum in Horst explores optical illusions. Visitor experiences include a mirror maze and an Ames room, where you appear to become smaller or larger. These examples show how the museum makes perception its subject, offering a different kind of visit from historical collections and buildings.
Het Aardbeienland is a strawberry-themed park in Horst aan de Maas, aimed mainly at families with children. Because its daily visitor capacity is limited, the park uses time slots. Booking arrangements may change, so check them before your visit. The Riddertocht is designed as an adventurous treasure hunt for children aged four to eight. Check the current route programme in advance.
Whether you choose castle history, textile art, church architecture, nature or a themed experience, Horst offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Horst, you can start by thinking about which of these interests will shape your trip.
