Meerlo brings together devotion to Saint Goar, a chapel whose history dates back to 1662, and walks through named landscapes. It is the only place in the Netherlands where Saint Goar is venerated. This offers several possible focuses for planning a trip: religious tradition, the history of monuments, or a walk through meadows and along a stream. If you are looking for a hotel in Meerlo, you can first consider whether the chapel, the historic buildings or the walks should be the deciding factor for your stay.

Sint Goar Chapel and devotion to Saint Goar

Sint Goar Chapel has stood in Meerlo since 1662. Next to it is a well that had previously been filled in and was rebuilt in 2022. The chapel and the well therefore bring two different dates into focus: the long-standing chapel and the more recent restoration of the well. Devotion to Saint Goar is particularly well established in Meerlo: it is the only place in the Netherlands where the saint is venerated.

A recurring occasion is the outdoor Eucharistic celebration at the chapel. It traditionally takes place on the Sunday after the annual feast day of Saint Goar. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the exact date in advance. This lets you combine your visit with a specific occasion rather than planning the service as an activity available every day.

’t Kasteelke: monument and access

’t Kasteelke was first mentioned in 1457 and is a Dutch national monument, a Rijksmonument. Its early mention and monument classification offer two different points of reference for learning about the building: its documented history and its current protected status.

Access is an important consideration when visiting. The access roads and courtyard are not public, but are often accessible; the interiors are not accessible. Since private access conditions can change, check in advance whether a visit is possible. These conditions are especially relevant if ’t Kasteelke is to be a fixed part of your travel plans.

Walks with different landscape features

The “Van Kapel tot Beek” walk passes through meadows along the winding Boddenbroek stream. It also leads to the Groote Molenbeek, the largest stream in the region. The two waterways have different roles: the Boddenbroek accompanies the route through the meadows, while the Groote Molenbeek is named as the walk’s destination. You can use these landscape features as a guide when choosing a route.

Near Meerlo, the Pieterpad also runs behind ’t Kasteelke along the Molenbeek. This is a different walking reference from the description of “Van Kapel tot Beek”: here, you can follow the Molenbeek and Kasteelke, while that walk is described in terms of its meadows, the Boddenbroek and its destination, the Groote Molenbeek. This distinction helps you understand the described walks by their specific features without combining them into a single route.

Another chapter in the town’s history

The Sint Johannes de Doper church offers another historical perspective. It was badly damaged, restored in 1946 and returned to use on 1 January 1947. The sequence is clear: severe damage was followed by restoration, after which the church returned to use. Together with the history of Sint Goar Chapel and the early mention of ’t Kasteelke, this offers several different points of reference for the town’s history.

Choose the right focus for your stay

When looking for hotels in Meerlo, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: are you mainly interested in the tradition surrounding Saint Goar, the historic buildings or one of the walks? If you would like to attend the Eucharistic celebration, plan around its traditional date. If ’t Kasteelke is important to you, check access to the non-public roads and courtyard in advance. For the walks, the landscape features described for each one give you a concrete basis for choosing.
