For trip planning, Meterik can be considered through two interests: architectural and local history on the one hand, and routes on foot or by bike on the other. The windmill, church and protected old village center offer concrete points of interest for the cultural side. For routes, the distances help you compare different kinds of outings. This lets you decide whether you want your stay to focus more on history or on an outdoor excursion.

Mill, Walk and Cycling Route

The “Eendracht Maakt Macht” windmill was built in Meterik in 1899. Volunteer millers operate it regularly. If you want to see the mill in operation, check the latest operating information before your trip. This lets you take its operating schedule into account without assuming a specific date.

The 33-kilometer Fietsroute De Locht passes the mill along farm tracks and country roads. An article from August 2023 describes this route; check that it is currently available before setting out. The mill is therefore also a point of reference on a longer cycling route, which itself includes several types of surface.

Walking Through Fields and Woods

The Ommetje Schadijkerpad Meterik is a marked 8-kilometer walking route. It runs along a stream and passes through fields and woods. The changing landscape gives the walk a clear character: you are choosing not just a distance, but also a route with several different sections. Before setting out, check that the route markers are up to date.

The two distances offer a useful comparison: the Ommetje is an 8-kilometer walk, while Fietsroute De Locht is a 33-kilometer cycling route. They involve different ways of getting around and different distances, not two versions of the same outing. You can first decide whether a walk or a longer bike ride better suits your travel plans.

Church and Protected Village Center

The R.K. Church of St. John the Evangelist is a Rijksmonument, a listed national heritage site. It was built as a hall church between 1899 and 1900 and converted into a neo-Gothic cruciform church in 1907. Its architectural history therefore comprises two clearly distinct phases: the hall church was built first, then converted into a cruciform church. For travelers interested in architecture, this transformation offers a specific point of interest.

Meterik’s old village center is also designated as a protected village scene: the area in question lies at the intersection of Schadijkerweg and Sint Jansstraat/Crommentuijnstraat. Meterik thus offers different perspectives on architectural and local history: the designation of an individual church building and the protection of a named village scene. The former “Theresia” convent was built around 1925 and is a prominent feature of Meterik. As a former convent, it adds another historic building to the village’s history.

Choose a Focus for Your Trip

If you choose Meterik mainly for its cultural history, the church’s conversion into a neo-Gothic cruciform church offers a specific architectural focus. If you would rather spend time on a route, you can weigh up the walk and the longer cycling route.
