Grubbenvorst combines asparagus culture with routes through the village and a nature reserve to the north. When planning, the differences between the options are important: the Aspergepad has three route variations, historical routes focus on different things, and Kaldenbroek is a landscape of woodlands and open grasslands. Local memorials and an annual asparagus festival add to the experience.

Kaldenbroek and the Landscape

North of Grubbenvorst lies the low-lying Kaldenbroek nature reserve, a silted-up former branch of the Meuse. Here, alder, birch and poplar forests alternate with nutrient-poor grasslands. The grasslands in particular are valuable habitats for many rare species on the Red List. The alternation between forest types and open areas gives the landscape its distinctive character.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Aspergepad offers three route variations of 6, 8 and 11 km. Possible starting points are Pastoor Vullinghsplein and Aspergecamping Californië in Grubbenvorst. The route passes the ruins of Gebroken Slot Castle and the Grubbenvorst Asparagus Artwork. The three distances provide a clear basis for choosing a route; it is worth checking the latest route details before setting off, as they may be revised.

The historical Grubbenvorst walking route is about 5 km long and passes historic buildings in the village centre. The historical cycling route passes historic buildings and sites around Grubbenvorst. When choosing between the two, you can use two specific points of reference: the walking route is about 5 km and stays in the village centre, while the cycling route explores the area around Grubbenvorst. The Swolgen–Venlo stage also passes through Kaldenbroek nature reserve, by the Ursuline convent and the asparagus monument, heading towards the village centre.

Castle Ruins and Local History

The ruins of the late-medieval Gebroken Slot Castle consist of a round tower with a fragment of the defensive wall; to the west is a corner fragment with a round corner tower. The castle, whose ruins are now called Gebroken Slot, was known as Grubben or Gribben. The historical names and surviving structures offer different insights into the village’s history.

The history of the church is also shaped by the events of 1944: the church tower destroyed at the time dated in part from the early 15th century. After the previous church was blown up in 1944, the church was rebuilt on the same site in 1952. An asparagus monument in the park by the convent commemorates the period when Grubbenvorst built its prosperity on asparagus cultivation.

Asparagus Culture and the Aspergefeest

Grubbenvorst is considered a centre for growing white asparagus; there are many asparagus fields in and around the village. This connection is also reflected in the Aspergefeest, which takes place every year in Grubbenvorst on Whit Sunday. Local chefs prepare traditional and creative asparagus dishes. The “Proef de Streek” area offers tastings of regional products, locally brewed speciality beers, wines and surprising asparagus dishes.

The festival also features information about asparagus, traditional asparagus beds and machinery used to grow asparagus. The programme may change from year to year; vendors and individual dishes may also vary. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year.
