The monastery church and chapels of Klooster Wittem are open at 8:00 a.m. every day of the week. On most days, they close at 6:15 p.m.; on Saturdays, they close at 5:00 p.m. Visitors can use the rooms for silence, prayer or reflection. Check the opening hours before you arrive. Architectural history, hikes and cycling routes also give your trip to Wittem a clear focus.

Monastery, Churches and Architectural History

The Redemptorist monastery complex was rebuilt in 1894 to a design by Johannes Kayser. The richly decorated Baroque monastery church, dating from 1729 to 1733, was preserved. The R.K. Church stands at Kerkstraat 31. Its limestone-built nave partly dates from the 12th century; P.J.H. Cuypers extended the church in 1905. Kasteel Wittem is a castle complex dating from the 15th century, with a round corner tower. Those interested in architectural history will find different periods here: from the partly medieval nave to the Baroque monastery church and the rebuilding of the monastery complex in the 19th century.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The 4.9-kilometre “Kasteel en klooster van Wittem” hiking route starts at the Redemptorist monastery and passes Kasteel Wittem. Along the way, the landscape features fields, woodland edges and gentle hills. Check the route details before setting out. From Wittem, you can also reach the gently rising fields outside the village.

Another option is the 11-kilometre Wittemer Rugzakwandeling. It includes a route booklet, a route map, reflective texts and a photo challenge. The hike can start at the reception desk of Klooster Wittem; confirm this starting point in advance of your visit. At 4.9 and 11 kilometres, the two routes differ considerably in length.

Klooster Wittem regularly organizes guided group hikes, including pilgrimages, reflective walks, themed hikes and silent walks. As the programme may change, check the dates in advance for your stay.

Mill and Cycling Routes

Watermolen Wittem was built in 1835 by the Merkelbach brothers, rentiers of Kasteel Wittem. Its waterwheel is located entirely inside the building. The millstream of Watermolen flows through the garden of Klooster Wittem. The mill and monastery buildings thus bring architectural history and flowing water together.

The Marialint connects Wittem via cycling junctions with Marian pilgrimage sites in Tienray, Venlo, Roermond, Sittard and Maastricht. For the “Lekker Rondje Heuvelland” cycling route, start at the Klooster Wittem car park at Wittemer Allee 34 or the Visit Zuid-Limburg shop at Dorpsstraat 27 in Gulpen. Route materials may be updated; check the details before setting off.
