Eys lies among the hills of South Limburg. Gentle slopes and viewpoints shape the surrounding landscape, and the Eyserbeek flows through the village. Hiking, nature and local discoveries offer a range of ways to explore the area.
Landscape between Eyserbos and Eyserbeek
Around Eyserbos, limestone grassland is being restored—a type of grassland that is rare in the Netherlands. On the western side of the forest is the only limestone field belonging to Het Limburgs Landschap. Plants found there include blue pimpernel, narrow-fruited cornsalad and small spurge.
The stream valleys are also part of the landscape around the village. Kingfishers may be found in the area. Together with the gentle hills and viewpoints, they make for varied surroundings for anyone interested in nature and landscapes.
Hiking trails and getting around
The “Langs Eyserbeek en Eyserbosweg Eys” hiking route starts in Eys and follows hiking junctions through the hilly countryside around the village. It partly follows the Eyserbeek and passes through a landscape of gentle hills, green fields and sweeping views. The route also runs along the Eyserbosweg, a well-known climb that is also part of the Amstel Gold Race.
Another way to find your way around is the “Tussen Eys en Nijswiller” hiking route, which you can follow using red posts. The Monumentenwandeling through Eys, by contrast, is not signposted. It starts and ends at St. Agatha’s Church on Mesweg. A guide booklet can be ordered or picked up at the Visit Zuid-Limburg shop in Gulpen. If you need the booklet to plan your trip, check the current ordering and collection options in advance.
Wine, local produce and culture
Domein Aldenborgh’s vineyard lies on the southern slope of Eys. Its location is characterised by calcareous marl with flint. Another local highlight is Eyserhalte’s truffle garden: established in 2020, it was the first truffle garden in Limburg. Visitors can learn about truffle cultivation in Limburg’s soil through an immersive experience. Eyserhalte also serves dishes featuring as many local products as possible. Menu details may change, so if you’re planning a visit, it’s a good idea to check the latest information.
At Eyserhof, recreational short golf is available for experienced golfers and for people picking up a golf club for the first time. You can reserve a tee time. The business operates seasonally; if you’re making specific plans, check the current booking options.
Mariagrot Eys is another of the village’s historic highlights. It is carved into a hillside, with a former shelter built by miners below it.
Getting around the village and finding accommodation
Eys-Wittem station is Eys’s railway station and is now a station on the Miljoenenlijn. It lies on the railway line from Simpelveld to Schin op Geul. There are three parking spaces right next to the station.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Eys, you can choose based on what you’d like your stay to focus on, such as hiking, nature or local discoveries.
