Elkenrade is a hamlet in the Land van Kalk, on the edge of the Plateau van Ubachsberg. The hilly surroundings and rural building heritage come together here, making it a clear focal point for travellers interested in the landscape and architectural styles.

Landscape and village character

Elkenrade lies between Eyserheide and Wijlre in a scenic setting. The edge of the plateau and the hilly landscape offer two different points of reference: the plateau describes the landscape setting, while the two villages place Elkenrade among neighbouring settlements. Travellers who give more weight to a rural setting and built heritage than to an urban itinerary can use these features as a basis for their choice of destination.

Farmsteads, timber framing and local details

Some farmsteads feature the hard limestone on which the hamlet is built, including Kunrader stone. There are also timber-framed houses. The village’s appearance thus brings together different building styles that draw attention to materials and construction. One specific combination can be found at the Alkenrode quadrangular farmstead in Elkenrade, where Kunrader stone, old oak beams and clay are used. Compared with the timber-framed houses, this brings out the different architectural forms and materials. For a trip with an interest in architecture, these details are a reason to choose Elkenrade not only for its landscape but also for its building heritage.

Another cultural detail is the cast-iron processional cross on the Wijlré–Elkenrade–Elkenraderweg route. It depicts Mary and John; the inscription reads “Praised be Jesus Christ 1898”. The cross adds religious imagery and a specific inscription to the picture formed by the farmsteads and houses.

Walking and cycling routes

For getting around on foot, the Elkenrade W2 walking route is a specific point of reference: it starts and ends on the Oude Elkenraderweg in Elkenrade. Its named start and end point are therefore both in the hamlet. At regional level, Gulpen-Wittem has 330 kilometres of walking paths and 62 recreational routes of varying lengths. While W2 names a route that starts and ends in Elkenrade, the selection in Gulpen-Wittem offers a wider range of walks of different lengths.

For cycling, the regional connection is what matters: Gulpen-Wittem is connected to the Limburg cycle route network. Numbered signs along the roads allow you to put together your own cycling routes. Walking and cycling therefore offer two different ways to plan: W2 has a fixed, named start and end point, while cyclists can use the signs to create their own route.
