Wijlre’s history can be seen in very different places: Sint Gertrudiskerk brings together several periods of construction, the watermill has medieval origins, and contemporary art and nature meet at Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre. There is also an art and collecting house with themed collections, as well as a brewing history that dates back to the 14th century. The town can thus be explored through architecture, art and craftsmanship.
Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre: Art and Garden
Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre combines contemporary art, architecture, cultural heritage and nature. Visitors can walk alongside the moat and view modern sculptures in the garden; individual artworks may change. Ways to explore include the Vlinderroute, the Geurroute and the Greyometer. These offerings may be revised. The estate also presents an international programme of exhibitions and public activities each year. As the programme changes, check the current calendar for specific dates.
As of 28 August 2026, the estate is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm. Seasonal opening hours and temporary notices may change; check the latest information before your visit. The “Langs kastelen en brouwerijen Gulpen” walking route passes the estate and can be considered a separate walking activity alongside a visit to the art and garden.
Sint Gertrudiskerk: Building History and Organ Music
Sint Gertrudiskerk stands in a central position on Wijlre’s church hill, surrounded by a cemetery. Its architecture combines a Neoclassical cruciform church with a later-added Neo-Romanesque transept, choir and tower. This combination illustrates the different building phases of the church. It replaced a building dating from 1640, which had itself replaced a predecessor from the 13th century. In 1995, the nave received stained-glass windows based on designs by Jan Dibbets.
The Müller organ is also part of the church’s history. Since 1998, Stichting Orgelkring Wijlre has held several organ concerts each year in July and August on this monumental instrument. The specific concert dates vary. If you would like to plan your trip around a concert, check the dates for the relevant year.
Watermill and Art and Collecting House
Wijlre’s watermill has medieval origins; its oldest written mention dates from 2 April 1411. It is often called “Molen van Otten” and described as the only mill in Limburg with two waterwheels. This offers a different perspective on Wijlre’s history from that of the church: here, the focus is on early origins and the written record.
The art and collecting house is right next to Wijlré-Gulpen station, in a former fruit warehouse. It displays themed objects dating from 1870 to 1970. Works of art by Tineke van Dien are exhibited and made in the reception room. Her modern paintings are distinguished by the colours and interplay of lines of the Limburg landscape. The display may change.
Brewing History and Cartils
In its own historical account, Brand Bierbrouwerij in Wijlre gives 1340 as its opening date and describes itself as the oldest brewery in the Netherlands. The “Langs kastelen en brouwerijen Gulpen” walking route also passes the brewery. The route thus connects two different stops that both feature in the town’s local history; the brewery has its own visitor information.
Kasteel Cartils lies south of Wijlre, at the confluence of the Geul and Gulp, between farmland and woodland. Buitenplaats Cartils is a separately named place: its house has medieval origins. The complex includes a main building, the castle, a gate tower with an attached farm, two old barns, a garden wall, two gates and a garden house. These different buildings and features offer further points of interest for anyone interested in the history and architecture of the surrounding area.
