In Susteren, paved circular routes meet cultural history and a varied landscape. The routes offer concrete details to help you plan: they differ in length, starting point and theme. Other highlights include the Basiliek van de H. Amelberga, the Schatkamer 't Stift museum and the IJzerenbos nature reserve to the south.

Monastery history and a precise museum visiting window

The Basiliek van de H. Amelberga in Susteren was built in the 10th century as part of a monastery complex. This gives the town a historical connection that continues at the Schatkamer 't Stift Susteren: it houses a Gospel book written by monks in the 11th century. The basilica and museum are two distinct points of interest for a visit focused on cultural history.

Museum visits are restricted to a narrow time window: from 1 May to 1 October, it is open on Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. If you plan to visit the Schatkamer, check its opening hours before your visit. This makes it easier to plan your museum visit around the other stops during your stay.

The IJsstraat casemate also tells a story of a later, military history. It was built in 1939 amid concerns about an invasion from Germany. On 10 May 1940, it was used to defend the eastern border with light machine guns. The year it was built and the date it was used mark two different stages; together, they give this historical site a clear timeline.

Paved circular routes with different starting points

The “Ommetje historisch Susteren” is 5.2 kilometres long and follows paved paths throughout. The circular route is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. It starts in the car park by the Sint-Amelbergabasiliek.

For a shorter walk, compare it with the “Ommetje natuurgebied ‘t Hout”: this circular route is 3.8 kilometres long, also entirely on paved paths, and starts at the P+R car park behind Susteren station. Those looking for a longer standard route can choose the six-kilometre “Ommetje natuurgebied IJzerenbos”, which can be extended to 8.1 kilometres. This route also starts at the P+R car park behind the station. The two nature walks therefore share a starting point, while the historic route begins at the basilica.

The distances make it easy to compare the routes by length without combining them into a single itinerary: 3.8 kilometres at ‘t Hout, 5.2 kilometres on the historic Ommetje, and six kilometres—or the extended option—in the IJzerenbos. All three routes follow paved paths; the “Ommetje historisch Susteren” is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Landscape and other ways to enjoy the outdoors

The IJzerenbos nature reserve lies south of Susteren. Woodland alternates with grassland and ponds, several herb-rich fields and two areas of coppice. Those who want to combine the circular walk through the area with views of the landscape will find several different features here, rather than one uniform woodland.

The Middelsgraaf is a six-kilometre-long, meandering stream. Its widened banks protect the surrounding area from flooding. A stone Bronze Age hammer axe was also found along its banks; the period is given as 2000 to 800 BC. The stream is therefore both a distinctive landscape feature and a point of reference for a prehistoric find.

The area around Susteren is described as green and rural, with cycling particularly highlighted. The Beeldentuin Suëstra serves as a meeting place and has benches where visitors can rest. This adds a named place to pause to the circular routes, without the need to plan an additional journey.

A cycling tour in loops

The Bezinningsfietsroute offers a different way to explore and is divided into three loops. The northern and southern loops lead to various special places in Het Smalste Stukje Nederland. The third loop, “Grenzeloos Verwonderen”, connects the Netherlands with Belgium and Germany. While the Ommetjes mentioned above are specific walking routes with starting points and distances, the cycling route is most useful for planning because it is divided into three loops. This lets you consider the circular walks and the cycling tour as different options for your stay.
