Roosteren combines trails along the Maas with a rich architectural history. The town offers different focal points for planning your trip: you can compare walks by distance and route, discover the river landscape, or explore churches and historic farmsteads. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or combine nature and cultural heritage.

The Maas landscape and De Rug nature area

The De Rug nature area stretches along the banks of the Maas and is part of Rivierpark Maasvallei. It protects Roosteren from flooding by the Maas and also serves as a water extraction area. Konik horses graze in De Rug and regularly cross the Maas into Belgian Limburg. Landscape and water management go hand in hand here: the area is not just a riverbank, but also has a specific role in protection and water supply.

The Struinpad “De weg van Illikhoven naar Roosteren” runs along the Maas and is also part of Rivierpark Maasvallei. New natural habitat has developed along this Struinpad, where large grazing animals roam freely. The trail and the description of the nature area offer two different perspectives on the Maas landscape: one follows a route along the river, while the other focuses on the development of habitat for large grazing animals.

Choose walks by distance and route

Two walks with the same starting point are a good choice if you want to compare distances. The 6 km Ommetje veelzijdig Maasdal starts at the Roosterhoeve car park and passes Kasteel Eyckholt. The 11.1 km Drielandenwandeling also starts at the Roosterhoeve car park in Roosteren, at the listed address Hoekstraat 29. It passes through the Netherlands and Belgium. So the difference is not just the distance: Kasteel Eyckholt is along the shorter route, while the longer one is distinguished by crossing an international border. Check the conditions for each route before setting out.

Another option is the Jacobspad on the Maaseik–Sittard section. The trail leads from Maaseik across the Maas to Roosteren and is marked with blue signs and a yellow scallop shell. The steel Pater Sangersbrug was built in 1952 and connects Roosteren with Maaseik across the Maas. Roosteren therefore offers different types of routes: a shorter walk with a castle along the way, a longer route through two countries, or a section of the Way of St James.

Churches, farmsteads and castles

The Sint-Jacobus de Meerderekerk combines a more recent building history with older origins: in 1843, the present church replaced Roosteren’s original 13th-century church. It is designated a Dutch Rijksmonument. If you want to explore the building in more detail, you can take a digital 360-degree tour. It shows the priests’ choir, nave, baptistery and bell tower.

The Maasdal farmsteads also shape Roosteren’s character, giving the town the feel of a small open-air museum. When it comes to the castles, it is worth distinguishing between their building phases and names: Kasteel Ter Borch dates from the 16th century and is also known as Kasteel Roosterborch. The present-day Kasteel Eyckholt was built in the mid-18th century, although its tower dates from the 16th century. Eyckholt formerly served as the farm of the lord of Kasteel Ter Borch. Since the Ommetje veelzijdig Maasdal passes Kasteel Eyckholt, you can also take its history into account when choosing a walk.

Plan a stay in Roosteren

If you are looking for a hotel in Roosteren, your planned activities can help you compare options. Both walks described start at the Roosterhoeve car park, but differ in length and route; for a stronger focus on history and culture, the church, Maasdal farmsteads and castles offer their own points of interest.
