Echt offers two distinct themes for a stay: local history associated with Edith Stein and walks through the landscape of De Doort. Its historic sites and varied routes offer different ways to get to know Echt.

Local history from Ehti to Edith Stein

Echt has been continuously inhabited since Roman times. The first written mention dates from a document of 950, in which the place appears as Ehti or Ettha. From the 13th century, Echt developed into a town with a town wall, gates and moats. These milestones span a long period of local history, from Roman settlement to medieval urban development.

The Karmelietessenklooster in Echt is closely associated with the memory of Edith Stein. She stayed there from 1938 to 1942. The monastery, with its garden behind it, also has cultural and historical value as a distinctive expression of the development of the Roman Catholic Church in the last quarter of the 19th century, as seen in its use and exterior design. Cultuurhuis Edith Stein also offers an insight into the building’s history: the historic building was constructed in 1887–1888 as a town hall, public primary school and teachers’ residence.

Museum and Sint-Landricuskerk

The Museum van de Vrouw is dedicated to women and their lives and is unique in the Netherlands. Its permanent Wonderkabinet features a selection from the collection as well as the history of today’s municipality of Echt-Susteren. The museum is in the town centre, next to the Sint-Landricuskerk. It is fully accessible to electric wheelchairs and walkers.

The Sint-Landricuskerk is a late Gothic, three-aisled brick hall church with a single-aisled choir dating from the 15th century. It was officially designated a pilgrimage site for Saint Edith Stein. The church also displays the choir cloak that Stein wore during her stay at the Karmelietessenklooster. The architecture, pilgrimage and a tangible memento each give a visit to the church its own historical significance.

Walking between local history and De Doort

The Historische Dakpannenwandeling Echt offers a 0.8-kilometre town walk and an extended 7.8-kilometre route through De Doort. This gives you a choice between a short town loop and a longer walk with a focus on nature. The route also passes through De Valk’s industrial heritage, once one of the largest roof tile factories in the Netherlands.

De Doort is a nature reserve between Echt and Susteren. Forests, pastures, ponds and marshes shape the landscape; it is also home to one of the largest populations of the rare European tree frog. The ponds are reminders of the area’s former clay extraction. The largest ones, on the north side, are old clay pits excavated in the 1950s for the De Valk roof tile factory in Echt. Nature and industrial history come together in De Doort.

The Doort-Taterbosch walking route combines a 6.5-kilometre Doort loop with a 6.3-kilometre Taterbosch loop to make an overall route of 11.6 kilometres. It runs along woodland paths and through pastures; some sections follow a leaf-covered path that can become boggy in wet weather. When choosing your route, bear in mind both the stated overall distance and this note about the path.

The walking route network of the municipality of Echt-Susteren covers 270 kilometres of routes signposted in both directions, 254 junctions and 11 starting points with information boards and parking. These starting points include Echt railway station and VVV-Echt. Route details may change, so check the latest description before setting out.
