Velp brings together historic architecture, geology and the IJssel landscape to create a varied picture of the town. For travellers interested in architectural history, geological collections or nature trails, the town offers specific points of interest in each area. Its attractions range from the Romanesque Oude Jan and the Gelders Geologisch Museum to floodplains, paths and cycling routes. When choosing a hotel in Velp, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on architectural history, museum finds or trails through the landscape.

Churches and Historic Architecture

The Oude Jan was built around 1100 in the Romanesque style and contains a mural on the subject of the Ten Commandments. This building brings together a specific historical date and a religious image. Another building is the O.L. Vrouw Visitatie Church, built in 1885 to a design by the architect J.W. Boerbooms. The associated complex is a neo-Gothic Catholic ensemble comprising a church and rectory.

The different construction dates offer a clear historical contrast: the Oude Jan dates from around 1100, while the O.L. Vrouw Visitatie was built in 1885. The architectural styles described also provide different points of emphasis. This makes it possible to explore Velp’s architectural heritage through more than one building, without treating the two churches as the same.

Biljoen and the IJssel Floodplains

East of Velp lies the historic country estate of Biljoen, with a castle surrounded by ponds and moats. The main features of the estate—including woodland, avenues, paths and tracks—have been preserved. Other features include the winding Beekhuizense beek with its cascades, mill remains and ponds. A view of Biljoen thus brings the castle together with the preserved features of its surrounding grounds.

The Velperwaarden offer a different landscape: these are IJssel floodplains that are inundated by the river during high water. The area is also a breeding ground for partridges, lapwings, black-tailed godwits and curlews. Water and birdlife go hand in hand here; the floodplains are described both as a landscape and as a habitat for these species.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

The 4 km Struinroute Velperwaarden runs near Velp through grassland and along the IJssel. For anyone considering a walking route, it has a specific length and a clear connection to the landscape. The Fietsroute Veluwezoom Velperwaarden has a different focus: it passes through rolling heathland, parkland woodland, extensive floodplains and old forests. The difference between the two routes is clear: the Struinroute follows the IJssel through grassland, while the Fietsroute links several types of landscape along a cycling route.

Another historic destination is the former steam pumping station De Volharding in Velp, built in 1875. From there, you can ride the IJsselroute by bike. The former pumping station and the cycling route represent two different aspects: De Volharding reflects the history of the town, while the IJsselroute offers a way to explore the surrounding area by bike.

Geological Collection and Local Life

The Gelders Geologisch Museum in Velp displays fossils, minerals and rocks. The exhibits mentioned include 500-million-year-old worm tracks, a dinosaur egg and mammoth remains. The minerals are arranged by chemical affinity.

Velp’s centre is located along Hoofdstraat, Emmastraat, Overtuin, Rozendaalselaan and Oranjestraat. Summer traditions include the Velleper Donderdagen, with busy terraces, a street market stretching for metres and music. Dates and programmes may change; check the latest information if you are planning your visit around them.
