Along the IJssel, the view stretches across extensive floodplains; at the same time, there are vistas of the rolling forests of the Veluwezoom. There are also cycling and walking routes of varying lengths, as well as historic sites and memorials.
Cycling and walking around Dieren
The Fietsroute Dieren Veluwezoom is approximately 30 km long. It runs across flat terrain along the IJssel and through hilly countryside. Another option is the Tour de Global Goals Rheden around the village of Dieren: its longer version is 22 km, and the shorter one is 14 km. The route passes through forests and by castles and waterways. Comparing the route lengths, you’ll find three different distances here—from 14 to 22 to approximately 30 km.
You can take the train to Dieren station for the Fietsroute Dieren Veluwezoom. The NS Veluwezoom Walk also starts there. It runs through Veluwezoom National Park and ends either at Rheden station or Velp station. Along the way, it passes old country estates and winds through hilly forests and extensive heathland. This gives you the choice between a cycling tour with sections along the IJssel and through nature, and a walk through forests, heathland, and parkland.
Horse-riding trips in Veluwezoom National Park are another option. They start at one of the entrances on the Eerbeek, Laag-Soeren, or Dieren side. This is another choice for travelers who do not want to limit their stay to cycling or walking routes.
Historic traces in town
In Dieren, Listening Station No. 24 of the Liberation Route Europe, at the lock on the Apeldoorns Kanaal, commemorates events from the Second World War. For a different perspective on the town’s history, visit the Schweer bey der Beckehof. This nationally protected monument comprises 35 homes and was established using the estate of Amsterdam merchant Schweer bey der Becke. Dieren-Zuid, the old center of Dieren, also has various historic buildings.
These places give your explorations a different focus from the routes through the countryside: the listening station is connected to a specific remembrance, while the Schweer bey der Beckehof and the historic buildings in Dieren-Zuid tell the story of the town’s architectural history. During your stay, you can alternate between nature experiences and historical discoveries without having to combine them into a single set route.
Steam train and playground
The steam train between Apeldoorn and Dieren is a special attraction, but it is not a daily service. The more than hundred-year-old Koningslijn runs through varied woodland and meadow scenery between the Veluwe and the IJssel Valley; the steam train between Apeldoorn and Dieren travels along it. If you plan to take the train, check the timetable in advance.
The volunteer-run Dierense Speeltuin gives children and parents the chance to play together. Children who use wheelchairs can also navigate the Nattevoetenpad. This specific information refers to the Nattevoetenpad; it does not apply to the entire playground.
