In clear weather, the view from the Posbank extends for more than 20 kilometres. Veluwezoom National Park covers more than 5,000 hectares and is part of the Veluwe, a large, contiguous natural area. Forests, heathland, drifting sands and estates are as much a part of its character as its almost untouched nature. A varied landscape, with a particularly large number of hills and sweeping views, defines the park.

Hikes with different highlights

The marked, 5-kilometre “Veluwezoom-Posbank” walking route crosses the heights and valleys of the heathland hills at the Posbank. It starts at the Veluwezoom Visitor Centre. The visitor centre is about 1 kilometre, or a 12-minute walk, from Rheden railway station.

If you choose your walk based on the scenery, you’ll find a range of highlights here: the Posbank route crosses heathland hills, while the “Heuven Beekhuizen Veluwezoom” route passes through the forest, alongside bodies of water and along the banks of the Beekhuizense Beek. The short “Schaapskooi Veluwezoom” walking route near Rheden crosses the Heuven estate to the sheepfold. It is also suitable for grandparents and children.

Views and practical information

The Brandtoren stands near the Posbank. The tower is 34 metres tall and can be climbed freely up to a height of 6 metres. Another way to experience the landscape is the “Rondje Posbank” cycling route, which passes the Posbank viewpoint, almost 90 metres high, in Veluwezoom National Park.

The Veluwezoom Visitor Centre is not far from Rheden railway station or Arnhem; the Posbank can be reached on foot from there. You can rent bicycles and scooters from the VVV in the same building. Before your trip, check the information about access and route details, as well as the availability of rental vehicles.

Sheep flock, garden and village church

The Rhedense Schaapskudde is one of the oldest surviving sheep flocks in the Netherlands and has a listed sheepfold, the Potstal. For more than 60 years, the flock has grazed the Rhedense Heide around the Posbank. On behalf of Natuurmonumenten, it helps keep parts of Veluwezoom open and promotes biodiversity in the open landscape.

The old, listed Schaapskooi Rheden is on the Heuven estate, north of Rheden. Since 1956, it has served as a home base for a large flock of Veluwse Heideschapen. Also on the Heuven estate in Rheden is the IVN-Tuin of the Oost-Veluwezoom branch, which is maintained by the branch’s members. Visitors can stroll through the IVN-Tuin; guided tours can be arranged by appointment.

A cultural highlight is the Dorpskerk, with its two unique organs. The main organ is a Meere organ dating from 1816. It was later enlarged in 1878 and restored in 1954, 1979 and 2011.
