De Steeg offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay combining culture and nature: the gardens and castle at Middachten, historic architecture and art in the town, and Veluwezoom National Park. The best time to visit also depends on the places you plan to see: some opening hours are seasonal, and a request is required for a guided tour.

Middachten Gardens and Castle

In 2026, the gardens at Landgoed Middachten were open from 3 June to 27 September, Wednesday to Sunday, from 12:30 to 16:30. For a later visit, check the schedule in effect at that time. Kasteel Middachten is open to visitors on Sunday afternoons in June, July and August. Guided tours are organised on request; arrange dates and any tours you would like in advance.

After the Royal House, Middachten has the largest portrait collection in the Netherlands. As well as the gardens and castle, art and the history of portraiture are also worth exploring. Since visiting arrangements vary, it is worth considering garden opening hours and access to the castle separately when planning.

Architecture and Art in De Steeg

Kerkgebouw De Steeg is a former Roman Catholic church dating from 1927, designed by Jan Stuyt and characteristic of its time. Fourteen Stations of the Cross by artist Pierre Stordiau hang in a side transept. The building’s history and artwork each give it a distinctive historical connection.

Het Strooien Dorp is a complex of thatched-roof houses, planned in 1919 as a social housing project. The houses on Bentincklaan are clearly visible from the railway line. They are considered an example of early social housing in De Steeg and the municipality of Rheden. The connection between architecture and social history makes this another cultural point of interest during your stay.

Bronze statues of the writer Simon Carmiggelt and his wife Tiny sit on a bench in front of De Steeg town hall. Wim Kuijl created the two statues in 1990. In the woods of Middachten is a memorial connected to the Second World War, commemorating those who went into hiding. Hoppenkamp, an old farm near Landgoed Middachten, adds to the area’s historic sites.

Landgoed Rhederoord and Its History

Landgoed Rhederoord is a historic country estate in De Steeg. It was established in the 17th century through the acquisition of a number of plots of land and farms. The Belevingsobject Landgoed Rhederoord is part of the Belevingsobjectenroutes. Jules Baron Brantsen is also associated with the estate as one of its notable residents: he was a circus baron and adventurer. The estate’s origins and an unusual biography come together here.

Veluwezoom National Park: Landscape and Activities

Veluwezoom National Park covers more than 5,000 hectares of forests, heathland, drifting sands and country estates. Activities in the park include hiking, cycling, mountain biking and horse riding. The national park is just a few minutes from De Steeg town hall. For a hike, the Lappendeken Carolinahoeve route passes through grand beech avenues and by old fields in the national park.

Another option for cyclists is the Het Blauwe Goud – Langs de IJsel route, which can be ridden from De Steeg in summer. Check current route conditions before setting out. If you plan to stop at the Carolinahoeve, you can enjoy a dish made with local and organic ingredients. Restaurant details may change, so it is advisable to check the current menu before your visit.
