Four hiking trails lead from the starting point in Westendorp through the surrounding countryside. There is also a circular walk, a short signposted cycling route and nearby destinations such as the Noorderbroek and Slangenburg forests. You can tailor your stay to your interests, with trails starting right in the village or nature and cultural attractions in the surrounding area.

Hiking from Westendorp

The starting point for the hiking network is marked by a red information panel at Doetinchemseweg 175. From there, you can choose from four hiking trails through the surrounding countryside. The routes follow sandy and forest paths, along streams and hedgerows, and between meadows and fields. These varied stretches of trail and landscape give you a clear idea of what to expect along the way, without all the routes needing to follow the same course.

One named circular route is “Rondje Westendorp,” which starts in the village. It runs through the Tandem estate, then along Buulsdijk and Smoddedijk towards the new Hoenderbosch nature area. This route offers a different way to plan your outing than the general selection at the starting point: you can include a circular walk with named sections along the way in your plans. Hoenderbosch is the direction in which the route heads; this does not mean that the walk goes through the nature area.

Beech Avenue and the Surrounding Forests

The Tandem estate lies east of Westendorp, in the direction of Varsseveld. The striking beech avenue leading to Huis Tandem was planted in 1900. The Noorderbroek forest is also nearby and is crossed by the Slingebeek. There is a good chance of spotting deer there. Westendorp also borders the extensive Slangenburg forest, which contains a wildlife park. These places offer different ways to experience nature: a historic avenue, a stream running through a forest, and a forest with a wildlife park.

Cycling and Events

If you prefer to get around by bicycle, you can take the short, signposted “Stap op Stap af” route. It passes through the area around Varsseveld, Westendorp and Sinderen. No route length is specified here, so you can use the description as a short route to guide your planning and follow the signs on site.

Culture is also part of what Westendorp has to offer: the Westendorp Blues Night is an annual blues event at De Vos Eten & Drinken. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Getting There and Finding a Hotel

Westendorp has a bus connection. You can travel by train via Varsseveld and Terborg; the two towns are five and six kilometres from the village centre, respectively. Check the relevant timetables and connections for your travel dates. The distances give you an indication of how far away the two towns are, but do not specify journey times.
