In Breedenbroek, diverse gardens and paths through the countryside meet church architecture and local festival traditions. These attractions appeal to different interests: the ’t Meihuus landscape garden is divided into several garden areas, while the walking trails each offer their own route and landscape features. The church and the events organised by Gilde St. Paulus also provide distinct cultural highlights.

Garden and Countryside

The ’t Meihuus landscape garden covers 1.5 hectares and is located around a restored 18th-century farmhouse. Its areas include a wildflower meadow with a frog pond, an ornamental garden with a pond and flower beds, and a fragrant rose garden. A vegetable and fruit garden complements a shrub garden with many special varieties. Flowers, water, cultivated plants and shrubs therefore feature as different garden themes.

You can visit on open garden days. On other days, groups of 15 or more can visit the grounds by prior arrangement. So if you are planning a group visit, arrange it in advance.

The Anholtsebroek nature area, also known as Breedenbroekse Bos, is located around Breedenbroek. It has many different sandy paths, and there is also plenty of wildlife to observe. An outing in the area therefore offers both walking routes and opportunities to watch wildlife.

Walking Trails in Breedenbroek

East of Breedenbroek, Rondje Hoonhorst runs through the surrounding countryside and close to the Anholtse Broek nature area. The walking trail is 2.58 kilometres long. The Groot Breedenbroek circular route is marked in orange. Its features include numerous forest and church paths for walking, views across fields, and diverse flora and fauna.

The two routes offer different points of reference: Rondje Hoonhorst has a specified length, while Groot Breedenbroek is characterised by its orange markings and the described paths and landscape views.

Church Architecture and Gilde Traditions

The Sint-Petrus en Pauluskerk in Breedenbroek is a so-called Waterstaatskerk and was built in 1854–1855. For travellers interested in church architecture as well as nature and gardens, it offers a tangible historical connection to the village.

Gilde St. Paulus organises the annual fair for residents of Breedenbroek and the surrounding area. Members can take part in bird shooting (men), Fladderschieten (women and men) and VogelknĂĽppeln (women) on presentation of their membership card. The Gilde also organises a Knollenkirmes in autumn. The details of these events describe different occasions and participation requirements; if you are planning a trip specifically around an event, check the exact dates in advance.

This makes it easy to distinguish between nature and culture when planning a trip: the garden areas and Anholtsebroek represent different aspects of the landscape and plant life, while the walking trails offer route and landscape features. The church and Gilde add architectural history and local traditions to the mix.
