Church paths, milling and railway history give Sinderen several cultural points of interest. The area is also home to the Wissink and Idink-Nibbelinkbos nature reserves, as well as a short children’s walking trail near a coffee farm. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the places and routes by theme and length: you can focus on cultural heritage, a route or a walk with children.
Church paths and local routes
The Kerkenpadenroute Sinderen is about 28 km long. The historic Kerkepaden paths around Sinderen are car-free routes for walkers and cyclists. In addition, the Stichting Kerk- en Fietspaden Sinderen e.o. has restored several unpaved paths and connected them to local cycling and walking routes. This gives you several points of reference when choosing a tour: the approximate length of the named route, the car-free nature of the Kerkepaden and the restored paths and their connections. These distinctions help you take the character of the route into account alongside its length.
Churches and local history
Keurhorsterkerk is listed in the Oude IJsselstreek municipal heritage register at Sinderenseweg 61 in Sinderen. In 2006, it underwent extensive renovation and was transformed into a contemporary building, more accessible in many respects and suited to several uses. The heritage listing and renovation therefore offer different insights: into the building’s status and its suitability for several uses.
Antoniuskapel also has a distinct local connection: it served as a prayer chapel for residents of the Groot-Breedenbroek and Sinderen districts. On Sundays, the Protestantse Gemeente Varsseveld holds morning services either at the Grote- or Laurentiuskerk or at Keurhorsterkerk. As service schedules can change, check the latest dates before your visit.
Mill, railway relic and visible traces
Maalderij De Nieuwe Molen, a Dutch national monument, is located at Keurhorsterweg 5. Demonstrations, milling and baking take place there several times a year. If you would like to see these craft processes, check the dates before your trip. This lets you plan your mill visit around a demonstration that is actually scheduled.
The former Sinderen railway stop building also stands on Sinderenseweg. It is a remnant of the Varsseveld–Dinxperlo railway line, which operated from 1901 to 1953. This building highlights the former rail connection, while the mill is known for its demonstrations, milling and baking. At Huis Sinderen, parts of the outer moat are still visible along Kasteelweg and Rentmeesterlaan. These sections add another visible trace in the landscape to the area’s architectural and transport history. A work of art from the Silo Art Tour is also located in Sinderen.
Landscape and routes of different lengths
Sinderen is surrounded by the Wissink and Idink-Nibbelinkbos nature reserves. This adds a landscape perspective to the churches, mill and historic buildings. A rest area with a playground at Koffieboerderij Groot-Nibbelink serves cycling and walking tours. The Natuur-, avonturen- en kabouterpad is also located near Koffieboerderij Groot Nibbelink: a walking trail for children about 1 km long.
The route lengths represent two very different scales for planning: the Kerkenpadenroute is about 28 km long, while the children’s walking trail is around 1 km. Together with the rest area and playground, the farm offers a specific point of reference for cycling and walking tours; the children’s trail provides a separate, shorter walking option. This means that, depending on your interests and preferred length, you can choose between cultural heritage, a longer route and a short walk for children during your stay in Sinderen.
