De Klencke brings together architecture, traditional farm building culture and landscape in a rare, exceptionally well-preserved and complete ensemble of great cultural and historical significance. It is joined by the Hervormde Kerk Oosterhesselen and the Iron Age Hunnenkerkhof: places that make history from different periods tangible.

De Klencke and its routes

The De Klencke estate ensemble includes a havezate, farmhouses, a stream valley, forests, fields and heathland. The landscape is therefore part of the whole, not merely a backdrop. The entrance area of the havezate is designed in the Louis XV style and features a richly decorated fanlight. This detail draws attention to the design of the entrance; at the same time, the ensemble offers a broader perspective on the estate and its landscape.

The routes offer different highlights. The Hoevenroute on the De Klencke estate passes all the farmhouses and follows the estate. On the Knapzakroute Oosterhesselen-Zweeloo, narrow paths through the heath and beautiful avenues through the De Klencke forests shape the route. The long De Klencke walking route passes through forests, heathland and pasture. This gives you a clear distinction: the Hoevenroute takes in the farmhouses, the Knapzakroute highlights paths and avenues, and the long walking route also includes pasture. On the Knapzakroute, Café Restaurant Deen in Oosterhesselen is listed as point 1, at Burg. De Kockstraat 34, 7861 AD.

Church and archaeological history

The Hervormde Kerk Oosterhesselen dates back to the second half of the 15th century. The Hervormde Gemeente te Oosterhesselen normally holds a church service every Sunday at 10:00. De Kerk van Hesseln can be used for concerts. If your stay includes a Sunday, the regular service time provides a specific point of reference for the religious life of the village.

The Hunnenkerkhof on Grevenbergsweg in Oosterhesselen is an Iron Age burial site. It lies a five-minute cycle south of Oosterhesselen. Two large burial mounds and fifty smaller cremation burial mounds are visible there. Conditions at the site may change, so check the current situation before your visit. The contrast in age with the church is striking: the burial ground dates to the Iron Age, while the Hervormde Kerk dates back to the late Middle Ages.

The Klenckeroute by bike

The Klenckeroute is a 52-kilometre cycling tour. It starts at Havezate De Klencke, at cycling junction 71. The distance gives you a concrete figure for planning, while the named starting point tells you where the tour begins. This makes it possible to plan the Klenckeroute as a cycling excursion in its own right, without confusing it with the walking routes. If you are considering the cycling tour, you can also use the starting point at the havezate and the stated distance together for planning.
