If you choose Zwinderen as a base for your stay, you’ll find a variety of things to enjoy: the stream valley and water birds in the Geeserstroom nature area, a route through the area, a rich village history and the Bosbad. Nature watching, cultural history and swimming each offer a different focus, giving you a concrete basis for deciding what you want your stay to centre on.

Geeserstroom and the Cultuurpad

The Geeserstroom nature area lies across the Verlengde Hoogeveense Vaart from Zwinderen. It features a distinctive stream-valley landscape, and many water birds can be seen in the open peatland. Landscape and birdwatching go hand in hand here: nature lovers will find a specific focus rather than a general-purpose day-trip destination.

The Cultuurpad Coevorden: Zwinderen–Geesbrug runs through Geeserstroom, linking the nature area with a named walking route. For navigation, the Cultuurpad is signposted on Brinkweg, at the turn-off to Stobbenakkerweg by the Zwinderen sign. Check local route conditions before planning your walk.

Village history and historic buildings

Zwinderen originated in the Middle Ages as an esch village on sandy soil at the edge of the Loodiep stream valley. The historic village centre has been relatively well preserved. The landscape and local history are therefore closely connected: its position at the edge of the stream valley and its medieval origins are key features of the village’s history.

Individual places also provide tangible points of reference for the history. Verl Hoogeveense Vaart 94 is a Rijksmonument in Zwinderen. The Roonboomsdijk boundary stone marks the boundary between the Gees and Zwinderen Boermarken. It represents a different kind of historical detail from the building history of individual farmsteads: it relates to the boundary between the two Boermarken.

Among the dated farmhouses are Boerderij ’t Muldert at Verlengde Hoogeveensche Vaart 35, built in 1864, and the farmhouse on Esweg, built around 1800. Together with Zwinderen’s medieval origins, these details offer different points in time for understanding the village’s history.

Swimming and practical information

Bosbad Zwinderen offers outdoor swimming. Facilities include a paddling pool for toddlers and preschoolers with a water-spraying clown. Bosbad is accessible to people with disabilities. As it operates seasonally, check before you travel.

Zwinderschebrug is in the centre of the village and is mentioned in the route information for the Knapzakroute Zwinderen. The information for this route also lists the Brug stop in Zwinderen on the Hoogeveen–Emmen bus line. Bus services and stops can change, so check your connection before travelling. The bridge and stop information relate to the Knapzakroute, while the Cultuurpad is signposted on Brinkweg.
