When looking for accommodation in Dalerveen, it is worth first considering what kind of trip you want: should your stay focus on moorland and walks, or are you also interested in the village’s ribbon-like layout and historic architectural styles? Dalerveen brings these themes together in its local character, offering concrete starting points for planning your trip.
Landscape between raised fields and moorland
Around Dalerveen and the Stieltjeskanaal, elevated, gently rolling raised fields shape the landscape to the east. They give way to the grasslands of the Oude Drostendiep stream-valley landscape. The Dalerveense Veen, a small nature area with uncut raised bog, also lies east of the village. Open raised fields, lowland grasslands and moorland are thus among the different landscape features that characterise Dalerveen.
The settlement pattern also reflects the area’s peatland setting: as a peat village, Dalerveen has the characteristic ribbon-like layout of a peat-cutting village. The view of the place therefore takes in not only the landscape beyond the village, but also its distinctive settlement pattern.
Walking and cycling around Dalerveen
The Pieterpad passes through Dalerveen on the LAW stage from Sleen to Coevorden. The Groene Wissel 182 is a 17-kilometre walking route that also passes through the village, then continues along grass tracks and woodland paths to the Verlengde Hoogeveensevaart. The routes have different points of focus: for the Pieterpad, it is the Sleen–Coevorden stage; for the Groene Wissel, it is the stated distance and route. Details of the Groene Wissel may change, so check the current route description before setting out.
Residents of Dalerveen have created three walking routes. The routes are available at the De Boerhoorn village community centre. On the “Oerlandschap van Drenthe” route, walkers can go through fields and woods towards the canals of the peatland area. Along the routes in Dalerveen, picnic benches invite you to enjoy the Drenthe landscape. For cycling, cycle routes using the numbered junction network pass through Dalerveen and Stieltjeskanaal. A cycle-friendly variant of the “Oerlandschap van Drenthe” route leads from Camping Buitenland via the Stieltjeskanaal back to the regular route.
Architectural styles and event schedule
At Hoofdstraat 141 stands a single-storey cross-wing farmhouse with a composite floor plan. It was built of reddish-brown brick on a grey-rendered plinth. Hoofdstraat is also home to a former director’s house dating from 1930, featuring Art Nouveau elements. The two buildings offer different architectural points of interest: the farmhouse stands out for its form, floor plan and materials, while the former director’s house is notable for its Art Nouveau elements.
One possible reason to plan a trip is the school and village festival in Dalerveen/Stieltjeskanaal. It takes place once every five years. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the specific event date. This will help you decide whether walking routes, moorland or local history is the main draw for you—and whether a festival date fits your plans.
