Zweeloo combines an artists’ village with notable traces of history and trails through the landscape. The Hervormde Kerk van Zweeloo dates from the 13th century and was sketched by Vincent van Gogh in 1883. Art, local history and nature can be explored here through specific places and a variety of routes.
Artists’ Village with a Historic Church
The church at De Wheem 10 is a Rijksmonument. Its inventory includes a pulpit dating from 1702 and a bell from the 13th century. The Hervormde Kerk is also home to the Tourist Info Zweeler Kerk, which offers tourist information as well as cycling and walking routes in the surrounding area. Ask locally about the availability of route materials.
Zweeloo is known as an artists’ village with many galleries and studios. Together with Aalden, Benneveld, Meppen and Wezup, it forms Kunstenaarsdorp Zweeloo; the five villages are members of Euroart, the European Federation of Artists’ Colonies. The history of the buildings is also part of the village’s character: many notable Saxon farmhouses can be found, particularly on Marktstraat, Kruisstraat and Klooster street.
A notable point on the Culture Path Coevorden between Zweeloo and Wezup is the workshop of blacksmith Masselink. The area is also connected to archaeological history: the so-called grave of the Princess of Zweeloo was excavated. Among the objects found inside were pieces of foreign jewellery.
Art in the Village and Outdoors
The BuitenExpositie features a total of 20 panels displaying reproductions of paintings outdoors on the characteristic village greens of Aalden, Benneveld, Meppen, Wezup and Zweeloo. It is accessible at all times. If access is important to your plans, check in advance.
Vincents Atelier offers another art experience: the series organised by Kunstenaarsdorp Zweeloo comprises ten workshops for participants to choose from. Under the guidance of local artists, the workshops focus on a range of techniques and materials. Workshop content and instructors may change; check specific dates and registration details in advance.
Walking and Cycling: Compare the Routes
For a walk in nature, the De Stroeten stream valley lies between the elevated fields of Zweeloo and Benneveld. Orchids bloom there in spring. An unmarked 5.5-kilometre walking trail explores the stream valley; plan accordingly for finding your way, and check the latest route details before setting out.
The “Symfonie van kleur” Van Gogh walking route is eight kilometres long and passes through Oud-Aalden and Zweeloo. It starts at Hoofdstraat 15, 7851 AA Zweeloo. Brown-and-white signs mark the route; there is a route guide and information boards along the way. Markings and route details may change, so it is worth checking for updates before your trip.
The DichterBij Zweeloo cycling route passes through Zweeloo, Aalden, Meppen and Wezup and is about 21 kilometres long. Information boards at its junctions provide additional details about the surrounding area. The walking route of the same name passes through Zweeloo and Aalden and is six kilometres long. For a distance-based comparison, choose from 5.5 kilometres in De Stroeten, six kilometres on the DichterBij walking route, or eight kilometres on “Symfonie van kleur”; each route has a different focus.
Events and Swimming
A pop concert has been held every year in Zweeloo since 1982. From 1982 to 1985 it was called Jongerendag; since 1986 it has been known as Sweelpop. The event is now held at ’t Alterbarg in Zweeloo. If the concert is the reason for your trip, check the date and venue for your travel year in advance.
For a swimming break, there is the Zwembad Zweeloo outdoor pool, with a leisure pool, a 25-metre pool and a separate toddlers’ pool. Facilities also include a water slide, a lawn for sunbathing, a terrace, lockers and parking. As opening is seasonal and facilities may change, check the latest conditions before visiting.
Whether you plan your stay around art and local history, a walk or a cycling route, the stated distances can help you choose based on length. If you are visiting for Sweelpop or a workshop, also check the relevant date.
