On the Curonian Lagoon near Svencelė, expansive waters meet extensive sand dunes and pristine, dense forests. There is also the 115 km coastal cycling route that passes through the town, a bog within a large protected area, and an oak placed under protection in 2025. This combination helps you consider Svencelė in light of different travel interests: lagoon scenery, cycling route or nature conservation.

Lagoon scenery and coastal cycling route

On the shore of the Curonian Lagoon near Svencelė, expansive waters meet extensive sand dunes and pristine, dense forests. The landscape encompasses more than a single named natural feature: water, sand and forest are all equally part of it. So if you choose where to stay based on the surroundings, the lagoon landscape can be your first point of reference; the route and protected-area setting are separate interests that you can weigh independently.

The 115 km coastal cycling route (Route III) passes through Svencelė on its way from Klaipėda to Rusnė. The 115 km refers to the full connection, not a section within the town. Svencelė can therefore be considered part of the route, while the total length describes the route as a whole. For your own trip, you can choose between the full connection and the section you want to ride. Check the route before setting out, as conditions may change.

Protected area and visiting period

Svencelės pelkė is part of Svencelės telmologinis draustinis, a 1,206 ha protected area that spans the Klaipėda and Šilutė district municipalities. The area’s size and the visiting rule answer two different planning questions: how far the protected area extends and when visiting the bog is prohibited. Visiting Svencelės pelkė is prohibited from 1 April to 1 August, except in cases provided for by the Lithuanian Law on Special Conditions for Land Use. Check the current rules before visiting. If you want to include the bog in your travel plans, first check your planned date against this time restriction.

Oak and yacht marina on the lagoon

Svencelės II ąžuolas was placed under protection in 2025. It is 32 m tall and has a trunk circumference of 4.6 m. Alongside the broader protected-area perspective, there is therefore a single tree with clearly stated measurements. The two nature-related features also differ in scale: one covers 1,206 ha and two district municipalities, while the other is a single oak.

Svencele Dunes yacht marina adds another dimension to the town. It opened on 1 July 2022 as privately funded infrastructure on the shore of the Curonian Lagoon. Alongside the landscape, cycling route and nature conservation, a specific development on the lagoon shore is also part of the town’s history.
