Dovilai offers several reasons to visit: a church with distinctive architecture, a hillfort with a military history, a sculpture composition, and opportunities for swimming, walking and cycling. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the bathing spots: swimming is possible both at Dovilų karjerai and at the southern beach of Dovilai Lake. The cycle route, meanwhile, passes through Dovilai and can be followed as far as Liepāja.

Church and Culture in Dovilai

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dovilai was built in 1862. It is a three-aisled building with a hexagonal apse and Neo-Gothic features. The three-aisle layout and the apse describe the building’s basic form, while the Neo-Gothic features define its design. The church can therefore be understood both by its floor plan and by its architecture.

The Ethnocultural Centre of Klaipėda District is housed in one of the few surviving old buildings in the centre of Dovilai. The centre offers guided tours and holds exhibitions; the specific programme may change. If you plan to take part in these activities, check the current programme in advance.

Dovilai Hillfort: Landscape and History

Dovilai Hillfort is hidden in a forest on the right bank of the Minija. Road signs point to it from Dovilai. As signs or routes may change, check the directions and trail conditions before setting out. The narrow, elongated summit plateau measures 110 × 20–25 metres; the steep slopes are about nine metres high.

At the end of 1944, the hillfort was incorporated into Klaipėda’s defence system. A trench was dug along the eastern edge of the summit plateau. An anti-tank ditch with a rampart extends to the lower slopes. Together, these structural details offer a concrete insight into the site’s military history, without requiring a longer route or a particular itinerary.

Another cultural highlight is the sculpture hill “Wheel of the Passage of Time in Dovilai”. The composition consists of twelve sculptures dedicated to the twelve months. This arrangement gives the artwork a clear theme of the year and sets it apart from the historical traces at the hillfort.

Water, Walks and Cycling

Dovilų karjerai is a year-round recreation area. The site includes a pontoon pier and a play and exercise complex for children; it is also used for swimming. Walks are possible in the adjacent pine forest. The facilities may not always be available. Before swimming, check local water conditions and safety precautions.

Dovilai Lake occupies the site of a former gravel quarry. A sandy beach on its southern shore is suitable for swimming, and beach volleyball can also be played there. This gives you two different places for water activities to choose from: Dovilų karjerai, with its pontoon pier and play and exercise area, and the lake, with its sandy beach and beach volleyball. Here too, check local water conditions and safety precautions before swimming.

The tourist cycle route “Pavyk pajūrio vėją” passes through Dovilai and can be followed as far as Liepāja. If you plan to follow the route, check the signage and trail surface, as both may change. In autumn 2017, 100 oak saplings were planted in Dovilai.
