Klaipėda District Municipality brings together geological natural heritage, the history of the lagoon region and a variety of activities. These include a stretch of cliff coast, an interactive shipbuilding exhibition, historic sites, hiking and cycling routes, and experiences on the water. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether you want to focus primarily on landscapes, cultural history or a particular activity.

Cliffs and Landscapes

The Olandų Kepurė cliff section is one of the geological natural heritage sites in Klaipėda District Municipality. It connects the theme of coastal landscapes with the municipality’s geological natural heritage.

In the wider destination of Klaipėda District, waves continually erode Olandų Kepurė hill, which slopes down to the sea at a height of 20–22 metres. The “Litorina” ecological educational trail also runs through the Olandų Kepurė Landscape Reserve. The trail includes signs, information boards, viewpoints and shelters.

Shipbuilding, History and Art

In Dreverna, the permanent interactive exhibition “J. Gižas. Opening the Shipbuilder’s Chest...” presents the craft of shipbuilding, the tradition of building burvaltės on the Curonian Lagoon and the way of life in the lagoon region. The exhibition thus brings craftsmanship and regional ways of life together.

The Gargždų krašto muziejus explores the history of Klaipėda District and the town of Gargždai, and presents works by various artists. The restored Kalniškės (Gargždų) piliakalnis offers a different way to discover local history. This tourist site overlooks Gargždai. The hill is associated with the Curonian castle of Garisda. The castle was mentioned in a document dated 4 April 1253, which also marks the first written record of Gargždai.

Dinosaur Park and Activities for Children’s Groups

In Radailiai, Dinozaurų parkas features more than 52 life-size dinosaurs that hiss, spray water and roar. The attraction also includes an upside-down house, which stands on its roof and where everything is turned upside down. The park’s two experiences are therefore quite distinct: animated dinosaurs and the unusual perspective inside the house.

Educational activities are organised there for schoolchildren, preschool-age children and children’s groups. If you would like to include one of these activities in your plans, check the current participation requirements directly with the provider.

Trails and Experiences on the Water

The “Paukščių takai” hiking trail runs from the small yacht marina in Dreverna to the birdwatching tower in Tyrų bog and is 14 kilometres long, round trip. In Klaipėda District, the “Kuršių kelias” cycle route follows two sections: Nemirseta–Giruliai and Dreverna–Svencelė. These route details offer different ways to get around and specific stretches to consider when planning.

For leisure trips on the Curonian Spit, groups of up to 30 people can rent the “Dreverna” ship. Another water-based activity is the “Žuvies kelias” culinary cruise. Its route passes through the Curonian Spit, the Nemunas Delta, the Minija River and the King Wilhelm Canal, and includes dishes from the fish culinary heritage.

The Way of St. James in Western Lithuania is a marked international pilgrimage, educational and cultural route that passes through Klaipėda District. Another notable structure is the 130-metre-long Lankupiai suspension bridge. It connects two parts of the village across the border between Klaipėda and Šilutė districts.
