The “Around Leipalingis” route brings together three distinct themes: Lake Aviris, the Leipalingis Manor House and Černiauskų Hill. This makes it easy to understand the route through its specific destinations: a lake with wooded shores, a manor house complex with a museum, and an archaeological hillfort site. The route details add information about distance, duration and surface to this cultural and landscape perspective.

Manor House, Museum and Architectural History

The Algirdas Volungevičius Museum of Local History is housed in the Leipalingis Manor House. It was founded in 1957 by Leipalingis Pro-Gymnasium and displays archaeological, historical and ethnographic exhibits about life in Leipalingis. This brings local history and architecture together in one place: the museum focuses on life in Leipalingis, while the manor house itself is considered one of the significant works of Dzūkija’s architectural heritage. The manor house is also a visitor attraction, an indoor attraction and suitable for children.

The surviving manor house complex comprises several distinct elements. These include a Neoclassical palace with columns, an office building, a utility building, a distillery and fragments of the park. The complex’s buildings include the manor house, an orangery and a granary. The site can thus be understood as a combination of representative architecture, additional buildings and park fragments. Photographs in the museum have been used to study changes to the architecture and decorative elements of the manor house buildings. They add an architectural history perspective to the study of the complex.

Lake Aviris and Its Surroundings

At Lake Aviris, the lake and its wooded shores take centre stage. The lake is considered clear and rich in fish, while the wooded shores are rich in mushrooms and berries. The Avirė hydrographic reserve lies south of the lake. Water, shore vegetation and a geographically situated protected area are thus identified as distinct aspects of the landscape. When exploring Aviris, visitors can distinguish the body of water, its wooded shores and the reserve to the south as separate natural features.

Route and Navigation

The “Around Leipalingis” route connects Lake Aviris and the manor house with Černiauskų Hill. The hill is also known as Leipalingis Hill and is considered the only hillfort site in Druskininkai Municipality. Both names refer to the same place within the route. The municipal designation adds a broader geographical reference to the place name for orientation. The lake, manor house and hill represent distinct themes along the route: a waterside landscape, architectural history and archaeological heritage.

The route is described as 24 kilometres long and taking three hours. The surface is listed as 70 percent asphalt and 30 percent gravel. These figures answer different planning questions: the distance indicates the route’s length, the duration gives the stated time frame, and the percentages describe the surface. This keeps time and route surface distinct as aspects of route planning.
