The Trakai–Onuškis section of the Camino de Santiago passes through Žalioji—a specific point of interest for travelers interested in pilgrimage routes. The route was marked with the Camino de Santiago symbol used in Europe. The markings are part of a 2018 project; before setting out, check whether they are still visible. This provides a clear location-specific focus for trip planning: the route passes through Žalioji, while other cultural attractions are in Butrimonių eldership and its surroundings.

Church and art in Butrimonių eldership

The brick Church of the Savior in Butrimonys is located in Butrimonių eldership. Its construction was interrupted by World War I and it was not completed until 1926. Its history therefore includes both the wartime interruption and its eventual completion. The church preserves paintings and folk art from the first half of the 19th century. It also houses early works by the well-known artist Antanas Kmieliauskas, who comes from the area around Butrimonys. The contrast in dates is noteworthy: the preserved paintings and folk art belong to an earlier period than the church, completed in 1926.

Market square and fountain in Butrimonys

The triangular market square in Butrimonys is located in the wider area around Žalioji. It is considered the only one of its kind in Lithuania and has been included in Lithuania’s list of urban planning and architecture monuments. Two aspects come together here: the square’s distinctive geometry and its inclusion on a list of urban monuments. A fountain shaped like an acrylic bottle stands in the same market square. A large whirlpool of water spins inside it; after dark, the fountain lights up in different colors.

Collections at the Ethnographic Museum

The Ethnographic Museum of Butrimonys Gymnasium has around 900 exhibits and hundreds of photographs. It also has an extensive numismatic collection from the 19th and 20th centuries. Numismatics is the study of coins and thus a distinct area of the collection, alongside the exhibits and photographs. One of the museum’s exhibitions is titled “Lino kelio.”

Geruliai Hill

Geruliai Hill adds a historical timeframe and specific terrain details to these subjects. It dates from the middle of the first millennium to the beginning of the second millennium. Its slopes are steep and 8 to 11 meters high, and the rampart is 170 meters long. The dating and measurements describe different aspects of the site: the date places it in historical context, while the height and length figures specify its terrain.

When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the immediate area and the wider region: the Camino de Santiago route passes through Žalioji; the church, market square, museum, and hill are in Butrimonių eldership or its wider surroundings. This places a route directly associated with Žalioji alongside a broader cultural focus as two distinct points of interest.
