In Alytus District, the Nemunas flows through the district, while Lake Žuvintas covers 970 hectares. The river and the lake offer two distinct landscape features that bring the destination’s natural character to life. Trails and protected areas also offer different ways to explore.
River Landscapes and Trails
Punios šilas showcases a striking combination of river and forest: a 19 km loop of the Nemunas surrounds it. Visitors can freely enter the Punios šilas landscape reserve. This unrestricted access does not extend to the separately restricted nature reserve zone; check the restrictions in force there before your visit.
Vidzgiris Botanical Reserve has a marked 9 km walking trail. The 52 km-long Way of St. James in the Alytus area is on a different scale: it passes through Punia and includes the Church of St. James in Punia. Comparing the lengths makes the difference between a walking trail and a longer route clear, without prescribing a fixed itinerary. Trail conditions and wayfinding may change; check the latest information before your visit.
Alytus and the White Rose Bridge
In Alytus, the White Rose Bridge shows how a landmark structure also serves a practical purpose: it is Lithuania’s highest pedestrian and bicycle bridge and connects the cycling routes on both banks of the Nemunas. Its distinction as the country’s highest bridge and its connection between riverside routes are two separate aspects to consider when planning a trip. As access conditions may change, check the latest information before your visit.
Regional Cuisine to Make and Discover
At Pivašiūnų amatų centras, guests can make butter themselves, enjoy it with the Dzūkija pastry “buikelė,” and then taste it. They also prepare and sample various Dzūkija baked goods: potato bandos, buckwheat babkas, cakes, pastries and kūčiukai. Making the food themselves and then tasting it makes this an active culinary experience.
Alovės amatų kiemelis offers another food-focused experience: the “Susiedai” organization presents the theatrical educational program “Duonos kelias iki stalo” in the authentically reconstructed setting of a 19th-century farmhouse room. Here, the bread theme is set against the backdrop of a reconstructed farmhouse room, distinguishing the program from the hands-on food-making and tasting experience in Pivašiūnai.
Dapiškis Manor in Dapkiškiai also has its own program: educational activities for children and guided tours for adults. The target audiences are as distinct as the formats in Pivašiūnai and Alovė. Check the arrangements for these activities before your trip.
Choose a Focus for Your Stay
When looking for accommodation in Alytus District, use your interests as a starting point: river and forest landscapes, marked trails, the bridge in Alytus or programs centered on regional baked goods each offer a different focus. These discoveries can help shape your own travel plans; they are not a prescribed tour.
