Šķirstiņi can be described through the artificially dammed Robežnieku (Šķirstiņu) Mill Lake and the history of the manor of the same name. The lake lies on the Šķirstiņa stream in a hollow; the first written mention of the manor dates from 1492. Road connections and the bus route via Limbaži and Pāle can also help you plan your journey.

When exploring the area, you can choose to focus on the landscape or local history: the lake is connected to the hollow and the stream, while the manor and mill provide dated historical milestones. This offers a choice of themes for planning your trip, without combining them into a single itinerary.

The Mill Lake and its setting

The Robežnieku (Šķirstiņu) Mill Lake is artificially dammed and lies on the Šķirstiņa stream in a hollow. The dam indicates how the lake was formed; the stream and hollow place it in its surroundings. The lake is privately owned. Check access conditions before planning a visit.

The manor and mill history

The first written mention of Šķirstiņi Manor dates from 1492. In 1512, the manor passed into the possession of the von Aderkas family; from 1695, it belonged to the Tīsenhausen family. Robežnieku Mill, also known as Šķirstiņu Mill, was built in 1845. Both names refer to the same mill. It is located in Šķirstiņi, “Robežnieki,” in Viļķene Parish, Limbažu novads Municipality, LV-4052. The dates refer to different historical details: 1492 is the first written mention, 1512 and 1695 mark changes of ownership, and 1845 is the year the mill was built.

The manor burned down in December 1999. The ruins remain, along with two manor cellars under one roof, a little farther away, as well as an apple cellar and an ice cellar. Take into account that the cellars are some distance away when planning your visit. Check whether the remains are accessible before visiting.

Roads and public transport information

For orientation by the order of places and route length, the V115 and V140 can be distinguished. The V115 is the 8.3 km Šķirstiņi–Āstere–Ludiņi connection; the V140 is the 15 km Kalnāres–Viļķene–Šķirstiņi connection. The place names help distinguish the two routes; the distances allow you to compare their lengths but are not journey-time estimates. Use the place names relevant to your plans to help you find your way.

Latvian national route No. 7 leads to Šķirstiņi via Korģene, Pāle and Drieliņi, and is listed as 30 km long. Route conditions may change, so check current conditions before relying on this route.

To reach the nearby Dzirnupes country house, the bus route goes via Limbaži and then Pāle to the “Šķirstiņi” stop. Check the connection with the operator before planning to use it on your travel day.
