The preserved manor house of the Vidriži estate sets a specific historical timeframe: it was built in the 1870s and 1880s. Alongside it, exhibitions, nature topics and events showcase different aspects of the destination. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between Vidriži, Vidrižu parish and the explicitly nearby area of Bīriņi.

Manor House and Exhibitions

The permanent exhibitions at “Melngaiļa sēta” are devoted to Emīlis Melngailis; the writer and educator Leons Paegle; the poets Austra and Rūta Skujiņa; and Hugo Legzdiņš, a submarine commander and recipient of the Order of the Three Stars. The history of Vidrižu parish and its schools is also among the exhibition topics.

The historical perspective thus ranges from individual life stories to the history of an area and its schools. The manor house adds a preserved building with a clearly stated period of construction. Visitors interested in cultural history can take these different points of interest into account when planning their trip, without combining them into a single topic.

Nature and Birdlife

Part of the Laugas purvs Nature Reserve, established in 1999, lies in Vidrižu parish. The area is an important stopover for migrating geese and cranes, and serves as a breeding ground for various wetland birds. These roles highlight two important aspects of the protected area: stopovers during migration and habitat for breeding.

Other nature-related attractions focus on different subjects. The nature trail named after Emīlis Melngailis passes through his birthplace. Jānis Ulmis’s open-air medicinal plant exhibition features more than 300 plant species. Here, the focus is on a route associated with a particular person and the diversity of medicinal plants.

The Manor Parks at Bīriņi

Bīriņi is near Vidriži, within Vidrižu parish. The walking trails of Bīriņi Castle pass through and around the two manor parks, Priežkalns and Mežaparks. Together, the parks form a single manor estate area protected under national protection number 6455. Bīriņi Castle, by the lake, has a terraced formal park area as well as a manor park with several rare tree species. The parks here therefore differ from the bird- and plant-related features of the other nature attractions described.

Traditions, Crafts and Sport

The traditional bird-waking ceremony is held at Zaļais Kalniņš in Vidriži. An event for this tradition was announced there for 22 March 2026. The date gives a specific reference point for the custom, without naming another event date.

A report from 2014 described how visitors could view, touch and buy items made at the “Kalna Kalēji” blacksmith’s workshop in Vidriži. Check the current visitor arrangements before visiting. Vidriži also hosts competitions featuring Latvian and Baltic enduro riders—a sporting attraction alongside history, crafts and nature.

Vidriži as a Starting Point for Finding Accommodation

This distinction helps you choose a destination that suits your interests and take the nearby location of Bīriņi into account separately when planning.
