At Lielezers in Limbaži, the artistically designed environmental installation “Bebrs” also draws attention to making nature interpretation more accessible. Between the lakeshore and the bog
The nature trail at Limbažu Lielezers connects the town beach and boat base with a birdwatching tower along a 2.3-kilometer route. In places, a wooden boardwalk passes through reed beds; from the tower, you can look out over the lake. Lielezers itself is 4.3 kilometers long and up to 6.5 meters deep. The trail and the lake therefore differ in scale: the route connects specific starting and finishing points, while the lake’s measurements describe the size of the landscape.
A shorter loop runs through Niedrāju-Pilkas Bog: the nature trail is one kilometer long and ends at an observation platform about three meters high. The bog is an important resting and nesting place for cranes, herring gulls, and black-legged kittiwakes. With a little luck, you may also spot black storks, bean geese, European honey buzzards, lesser spotted eagles, black grouse, hazel grouse, European golden plovers, and Eurasian three-toed woodpeckers. The difference between the two trails is clear: at Lielezers, the focus is on linking the beach, boat base, and observation tower; in the bog, it is on the loop walk and the possibility of birdwatching.
Livonian history and regional culture
In Staicele, the Lībiešu muzejs Pivālind is housed in one of the town’s oldest log buildings, built in 1870. The museum offers insights into Livonian history and traditions, local place names, and their connection to the Livonian language. The collection includes historical household items from the Staicele area, tools, musical instruments, and paintings by local landscape artists. The museum brings language, everyday history, and representations of the landscape together.
Other museums also offer their own perspectives on cultural history. Permanent exhibitions at the “Melngaiļa sēta” Culture and Education Centre focus on the life and work of Emīls Melngailis. The Bārda Family Memorial Museum “Rumbiņi” preserves the memory of the poets Fricis Bārda, Paulīna Bārda, and Antons Bārda, who were important figures in Latvian culture. The museum includes preserved farm buildings dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
In Ainaži, the Ainažu jūrskolas muzejs presents the history, activities, achievements, and significance of the first Latvian-Estonian maritime school. The Ainažu Ugunsdzēsības muzejs has a different focus: its permanent exhibition “Spožas pogas, ķiveres” tells the story of the town and features displays from the collection of the Latvian Firefighting Museum. Visitors can also ask about visiting the volunteer fire brigade’s depot; check in advance whether a visit is possible on your chosen date.
The Pāles novadpētniecības muzejs documents and presents the cultural and historical heritage of Pāle Parish. Tours are available by prior arrangement and can be scheduled for your preferred day and time. Plan this museum visit in advance.
Trails, stories, and local experiences
At the Minhauzena muzejs, museum exhibits meet a storybook landscape: you can see weapons, hunting trophies, and a wax figure of Baron Münchhausen. The Minhauzena Forest Nature Trail offers three route lengths—one, 3.4, and 4.3 kilometers—and passes 55 figures from stories, represented as wooden sculptures. The museum also has a large wooden play ship with slides, swings, and climbing features for children. The different route lengths give you a specific choice for your walk; the figures and play ship add a distinctive focus, different from the museums devoted to regional history.
The “Limbaži–Katvari” Greenway is seven kilometers long and follows the route of a former railway line. It is suitable for cycling, hiking, and cross-country skiing; seasonal access may vary. Check the condition of the trail before setting out, too. Another seasonal destination is the Svētupes muižas komplekss, which is open from June to September. Cultural, art, sports, and motorsports events, as well as guided tours, take place there. Since dates and programs may change, it is advisable to check the specific event details before visiting.
