Limbaži offers different ways to explore urban history, crafts and nature: the old fire station depot tells the story of the voluntary fire brigade, while a 2.3-kilometre nature trail at Limbažu Lielezers runs between the town beach and the boat base. Silver and textiles are also part of the picture, explored in different ways through exhibitions, guided tours and workshops. During your stay, you can choose between historical stories, hands-on demonstrations and a route along the lake.

Urban history: fire brigade, medieval times and exhibitions

At the “Vecais ugunsdzēsēju depo”, an exhibition explores the history of the Limbaži Voluntary Fire Brigade. The focus of the visit is on the association’s activities, while the tower offers a view of the town. The climb to the top of the depot tower leads over narrow staircases and glass floors. From windows on the fifth floor, visitors can look out over the central part of Limbaži’s Old Town. Check current visiting arrangements for the exhibition and tower in advance.

The “Limbažu viduslaiku pilsdrupas” are considered one of Latvia’s oldest fortifications. The exhibition “PERPETUUM MOBILES” offers a different historical focus: it explores the development of Limbaži into a district centre in the 13th–15th centuries and is housed in three rooms on the first floor of the main building of Pilsmuiža in Limbaži. The exhibition invites visitors to take an active part in exploring the past. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit here, too.

Silver and the history of textile crafts

The “Sudraba Limbaži” exhibition offers a guided tour about Limbaži’s connection with silver, including soldering demonstrations. At the “Sudraba Limbaži” workshop, visitors can learn skills for working with brass and silver, and master classes are also offered. The tour and workshop have different focuses: the former centres on silver and demonstrations, while the latter offers hands-on experience with materials and techniques. Check programme details and dates before your trip.

“Filcītis” tells the story of the former “Limbažu Filcs” factory. An exhibition on the history of “Limbažu Filcs” includes a felt workshop where visitors can try making felt souvenirs. At “Limbažu tīne”, visitors can watch wool being processed using historic equipment. If you plan to visit these attractions, check current visiting arrangements for the exhibition, workshop and wool processing in advance.

Regional crafts are also part of Limbaži’s character: the “Radīts Limbažu novadā” shop is in the town centre and brings together works by more than 100 producers, home producers, craftspeople and creatives from Limbažu novads. Alongside historic production methods, the focus is also on work from the region.

Nature at Limbažu Lielezers

The nature trail at Limbažu Lielezers links the town beach and the boat base along a 2.3-kilometre, one-way route. Take the direction of travel into account when planning your day. Sections with wooden boardwalks pass through reed beds; from the birdwatching tower, you can look out over the lake. The trail combines a defined route with a viewpoint by the water, complementing the historical and craft attractions with an opportunity to experience nature.

Another landmark in Limbaži is Vienības Park, located between Rīgas iela and Parka iela.
