Near the destination is Gunung Limo in Mantren Village, Kebonagung District, Pacitan Regency. Cultural sites in Banjarjo, also in Kebonagung District, are nearby as well. Looking further afield, the wider Pacitan area offers more landscape and cultural highlights—from karst mountains and coastlines to Wayang Beber.
Culture in Banjarjo
A report on a community program from 2024 locates the Baritan tradition described there in Banjarjo Village. The reported occasion took place in the month of Satu Suro, also known as Satu Muharram, and was held under the theme “Jarwan Patedhan ing Tata Cara Padatan.” At the celebration described, each household brought one Tumpeng. The Tumpeng were gathered together, after which everyone prayed and ate together.
A historical report also concerns Banjarjo: on February 6, 2016, the tomb of Ki Ageng Buwana Keling in the Nglaos hamlet of Banjarjo Village, Kebonagung District, was described as neglected. The year refers to that report on the tomb’s condition at the time.
Pacitan in the Wider Landscape
Most of Pacitan Regency consists of limestone mountains belonging to the Pegunungan Kidul range. Pacitan Regency is also part of the UNESCO-recognized Gunung Sewu Geopark, which is part of the Global Geoparks Network. Along Pacitan’s coast, white sand, striking karst cliffs, and the Indian Ocean surf shape the landscape.
Pantai Buyutan is a natural destination in Pacitan Regency, with white sand, clear seawater, cliffs, and coral rocks. Visitors can walk along the beach, relax to the sound of the waves, and photograph the coastal landscape. Pantai Klayar combines white sand and blue sea with rocky cliffs and a largely unspoiled coastline. The two coastal destinations showcase different aspects of the wider region without implying that their features are found at every location in Kebonagung.
Pantai Pancer attracts surfers because of its relatively large waves; conditions vary with the weather and surf. Inland, Gua Tabuhan offers a different kind of experience: visitors can strike stones that produce sounds similar to those of traditional Gamelan instruments. The Sungai Maron is associated with a guided 4.5-kilometer boat trip that takes about 45 minutes.
Cultural Traditions in the Wider Pacitan Area
Wayang Beber Pacitan was recognized as national intangible cultural heritage by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture in 2015. During performances, painted picture scrolls are unrolled in front of a Dalang, who narrates the scenes depicted. Five people take part: four play Rebab, Kendang, Kenong in Laras Slendro, and Gong; one person takes on the role of Dalang. The oldest Wayang Beber is located in Desa Karang Talun, Kelurahan Gedompol, Kecamatan Donorojo, Kabupaten Pacitan.
Another recognized tradition is Kethek Ogleng from Desa Tokawi, Kecamatan Nawangan. It was recognized in 2019 as national intangible cultural heritage in the performing arts category. Ceprotan, meanwhile, is a traditional practice passed down by the residents of Desa Sekar, Kecamatan Donorojo. It takes place each year in the Javanese calendar month of Longkang.
The history of the wider Pacitan area is also worth exploring: the Monumen Panglima Besar Jenderal Soedirman in Pakisbaru, Nawangan, features a diorama about Jenderal Soedirman and his guerrilla war in Pacitan. Together with the landscape and cultural sites, it offers a regional overview, while Mantren and Banjarjo provide the specific points of interest in Kebonagung District.
